[News Boquete] I can do most of it, but....

I need some support. 🤲🏻 Yesterday 8 cats were taken to the veterinarian in David. 👨🏻‍⚕️ My time ⏰ and gasoline ⛽ is not a problem but I could use some support with the veterinary bills, needed medicine and special dietary food. Could you send a monthly donation for the care these cats need? After the vet visit, I delivered 4 bags of cat food to a feeding station 🐈 in Las Lomas. I could use some support with the more than 35 bags of food needed every month to feed over 200 cats. Could you sponsor a monthly bag of food for one of the feeding stations?  I need some support with caring for the cats. Thank you.

[News Boquete] Panama sets world record $10,005 a kilo for coffee

Panama sets world record $10,005 a kilo for coffee

Reprinted from Newsroom Panama

Panama set a new price record for a kilo of coffee at the specialty coffee auctions when the Carmen Estate lot in Paso Ancho, district of Tierras Altas (Chiriquí), managed to sell a kilo for of $10,005.

This has caused astonishment among connoisseurs, it is a grain of the geisha variety in the washing process. The lot in question was acquired by the company Coffee Techo Ltd of New Zealand.

The coffee, which has caused a sensation in the demanding specialty market, is grown on the Carmen Estate at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level. A production that began in 1960 and which belonged to the Franceschi family, is now owned by the Chinese company Dashang Group.

Jean-Paul Langenstein, manager and representative of the company, said he was very impressed and happy because Panamanian coffee is in great demand worldwide.

Hunter Tedman, president of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP), considered that the auction had an excellent response from global buyers.

"Expectations have been exceeded and we find ourselves with a new world record in coffee prices. It demonstrates once again the great confidence that buyers have in our producers," said Tedman.

The lot of Carmen Estate, it is a geisha variety with a washed process, which expresses the pure form of the "terroir" of the grain, which translates into the intrinsic flavor and aroma of the geisha variety; and that, together with the soil and climate conditions, make Panama produce the best coffees in the world, explained Tedman.

The auction began at 6:30 pm Tuesday on the website https://auction.bestofpanama.org/en/lots/auction/best-of-panama-2023, where 50 lots of the best coffee produced in our country.

Of those 50 lots of coffee, 18 correspond to natural geisha, 18 lots of geisha coffee in the washed process and 14 lots correspond to varietals.

OTHER VARIETIES
In the natural process of geisha coffee batches, the batch from De la Rosa Mount Totumas, located in the district of Tierras Altas, reached a price of $2,504.00 a kilo. While in the varietals, the Chicho Gallo variety coffee from Guarumo Coffee Farm, from the Renacimiento district, reached a price of $412 per kilo.

The auction took more than 15 hours.

[News Boquete] Buenos Vecinos De Boquete Newsletter August 2023

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete

  • Food Start Program

We Need Your Help

For the first time in our history, we have had to turn away families needing our help. We now have a waiting list of people we are unable to serve, except with an initial emergency food delivery. The reason? Food prices have been climbing and we serve more families than ever before, driving our monthly costs from around $3,600 to around $4,600 over the past two years. We simply do not receive adequate donations on a monthly basis to cover these costs.

We are asking all our friends in the community to consider making a monthly donation to Buenos Vecinos. It is easy to do through PayPal, even if you don't have (or don't want) an account with them. Just visit our website at www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com and click on "HELP NOW" to reach our donation page, then click on the "Donate" button. You can also go straight to the PayPal site and type buenosvecinosdeboquete.com into the "who to pay" field. There you can choose the box to make your donation a recurring gift. The amount you choose will be deducted automatically each month from your designated credit or debit card.

Please help us feed more families in need. A gift of $40 per month would sponsor a family of 4 for a year. Our monthly food delivery is vital in bridging the gap between what they can earn and what they need to feed their families for the month. If you are already a donor, please know how much we appreciate your support.

Family of the Month

Thirty year-old Maribel is a great mom, intelligent, and attentive to her kids' needs and motivational drives. Josue, her energetic three year old is a typical toddler, always on the move, who loves balls and toys and someone to play with him. Maribel keeps an eye on him at all times so he does not leave the tiny house they occupy for fear of any snakes that might be hiding in the unmowed grass surrounding the house, especially at night. In addition, the house she rents for $30 a month has a single electric light bulb and a standpipe for water, but no indoor toilet.  She looks forward to a day when she can find a safer and cleaner environment for all of them. But that day is a long way off since her only financial support is Josue's father's contribution of $80 a month.

Melany is eleven years-old and because she has developmental delays she needs structure in her daily life. Fortunately she loves the chores that her mom  gives her every day and thrives with the praise this earns her. Melany also has a great sense of playfulness and loves to tickle people to see their reaction. She is a jewel during Social Saturdays at the Handicap Foundation, volunteering to help anyone who needs some little duties she can perform, a puzzle to pick up, a game to sort out, or a baby from whom she can coax a smile.

Sixteen year old Aldair has much more severe mental and physical challenges that require Maribel's constant supervision.  He loves to look at picture books, but Maribel must keep him busy and out of danger throughout the day, and so she is unable to work outside the home.

Maribel says thank you for the food that BVB gives her each month.  She collects it at the Handicap Center's last Saturday Social of each month, when all of their clients come together to spend time with one another and to celebrate all of the birthdays of that month.  She welcomes these few moments of respite each Saturday when volunteers lovingly  provide her kids that little extra diversion and supervision. This is the kind of single mom who desperately needs assistance, and so both charitable organizations are there to provide it, thanks to their loyal volunteers and generous donors.  The cooperation between Buenos Vecinos de Boquete and the Handicap Foundation is a strong alliance that currently helps more than 110 families, many like this, every month.

Food Start Program

We continue to have a huge need for large water and bleach bottles for our successful Food Start Program. The empty bottles get filled with soil and vegetable plant seedlings (peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, etc.) which we deliver to our clients for planting in their home gardens. Since our main food delivery is comprised of non-perishable items like rice, beans, lentils, cooking oil, canned meat and fish, etc. this is an important source of fresh vegetables for our families.

Because the seedlings remain in the bottles for some time before they are big enough for transplanting, the bottles are slow to recycle, so we need 60-65 bottles each month to make sure each family receives the new plants each month.

Please bring your bottles to our table at the Tuesday Market Arco Iris building (across from Tap Out). And don't forget to ask your friends to give you their bottles, instead of taking them to recycling. We very much appreciate your help.

Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining.
