Buenos Vecinos de Boquete

Klim for KIDS Update

You can also donate here

The KLIM for Kids Campaign is still going strong. A big thanks goes out to the many people who dropped off cans of KLIM at Mailboxes, Etc. or our Tuesday Market table. We received 52 cans in June – almost 30% of our monthly order! Quite a few people have told us that they keep KLIM permanently on their shopping list, which is really appreciated!

Considering that we distribute around 192 cans of KLIM a month, our need for KLIM donations remains high. Please consider keeping a can of KLIM on your shopping list.

Family of the Month

73 year-old Josefina was born and raised in the same house where she and her two adult daughters now live, a small three-room concrete structure surrounded by well-tended little gardens and pots of colorful flowers.

Born partially blind, Josefine still lives a normal life with unlimited mobility in and around her house.  Her oldest daughter, D., recalls a precious family memory which she describes as a miracle in her mother's life. Josefine awakened one sunny morning in 2004 and, for the first time in her life, saw objects around her in full color. It added a new dimension of happiness to her favorite pastime, gardening and raising flowering plants.

Since D. lost her job in December this family has had no outside income, but she continues to pursue local housekeeping and childcare opportunities. Now they all make dulces (cakes) and rice pudding cups and sell them in the village. These modest proceeds pay for their utilities, Josefine's diabetes and high blood pressure medicines, and the small amount of food needed to augment the BVB groceries delivered to their door each month. D. says they do not know how they would be able to continue without this help and they are grateful for it.

Thank You Radio Chiriqui!

Our Marketing Committee chair, Betty Speyer, had the opportunity to be interviewed on the Radio Chiriqui Friday Morning program on June 23. The hosts that day, Patrick and Michael, were most welcoming and asked great questions. Betty had ample time to speak about Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, the work we do and the families we serve. As well as being heard on the radio, the program was live-streamed on Facebook, so it was really a wonderful opportunity to reach out to people who might not be familiar with our organization.

We hope that our supporters will help raise awareness by sharing our monthly e-newsletter with friend and family.

Jewelry Sale!

Due to a generous donation by a long-time supporter, we are offering a selection of necklaces for sale, with proceeds used to buy food for our families. This month, we are featuring 11 attractive pieces sure to dress up any outfit. To reserve one of these necklaces for a small donation of at least $10, email Betty Speyer at espeyer@hotmail.com with the number you wish to purchase, then pick it up at our Tuesday Market table in the Arco Iris building across from TapOut. If this is not convenient, Betty will be happy to make arrangements to meet up with you in town.

Bottles, Bottles, Bottles!

We continue to have a huge need for large water and bleach bottles for our successful Food Start Program. The empty bottles get filled with soil and vegetable plant seedlings (peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, etc.) which we deliver to our clients for planting in their home gardens. Since our main food delivery is comprised of non-perishable items like rice, beans, lentils, cooking oil, canned meat and fish, etc. this is an important source of fresh vegetables for our families.

Because the seedlings remain in the bottles for some time before they are big enough for transplanting, the bottles are slow to recycle, so we need up to 50 bottles each month to make sure each family receives the new plants each month.

Please bring your bottles to our table at the Tuesday Market Arco Iris building. We very much appreciate your help!

Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining.
