Here are the top 5 mistakes to avoid:

𝟏. 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞

Mistake: Using the wrong grind size for your brewing method.

Impact: A grind that is too coarse or too fine for your brewing method can lead to over-extraction or under-extraction, resulting in too bitter, acidic or weak coffee.

Solution: Use a grinder to match the size of your grind to your brewing method. For example:

Coarse Grind: cold brew, french press.

Medium Grind: Pour-over filter coffee, drip coffee makers

Fine Grind: Espresso, Moka pots.

𝟐. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨

Mistake: Not measuring coffee grounds and water accurately.

Impact: Using too few coffee grounds can make the coffee weak and bitter, while using too many can make it overly strong and acidic.

Solution: Use a standard coffee-to-water brew ratio. We distinguish two types of brewing; espresso style and filter coffee. Espresso brew ratios vary from 1:2 to 1:3 (meaning 1 part of coffee grinds for 2 or 3 parts of water). Filter coffee brew ratios vary from 1:15 to 1:17.

Use a scale to measure the coffee grounds and water more precisely.

𝟑. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫

The type of water you use can significantly impact the flavour, aroma, and overall quality of your coffee.

Mistake: Brewing coffee with whatever water is available

Impact: Water that contains impurities or contaminants, such as chlorine, sulfur, or other chemicals, can impart unpleasant flavours and odours to your coffee. Water that has a too high or too low mineral content, cannot extract all the flavours and aromas out of your coffee. A neutral Ph level will avoid negatively altering the coffee taste.

Solution: Brew coffee with filtered water, free from impurities, balanced mineral content and a PH between 6.5 - 7.5

𝟒. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

Impact: The temperature of the water has a strong effect on your coffee extraction. Water that is too hot can over-extract the coffee, making it overly bitter, while water that is too cold can under-extract, resulting in a weak or sour acidic taste.

Solution: Use water that is between 90°C to 96°C (195°F and 205°F) for brewing. If you don't have a thermometer at hand, let it come to a boil and then cool slightly before pouring it over the coffee grounds.

𝟓. 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬

Mistake: Using stale or pre-ground coffee.

Impact: Coffee loses its freshness and flavour over time. Pre-ground coffee can also be less fresh compared to freshly ground beans.

Solution: Use freshly roasted coffee beans and grind them just before brewing. Store beans in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture to maintain freshness.
