my name is Alex Bornemann, founder of K9Boquete. Many of you may know me from my work with animal rescue, dog training or other canine activities. If you have not heard of me, even better, I love getting to know other dog lovers in and around Boquete.
I am a certified Dog trainer and behaviour specialist and have been living in Boquete for 5 years. So far most of my work has been with rescue groups and through private lessons as I am never in Boquete for too long at a time. I am happy to announce that I will be offering a set of group lessons in basic obedience. The lessons will start Sunday February 2nd and will be held once a week for 7 weeks in Volcancito, Boquete for a total cost of 70$. The planned time of instruction is from 10 am until 11 am but I am willing to adjust to students' needs.
During the course you will learn how to effectively communicate with your dog through obedience training. We use reward-based motivational training to help you bring out the best in your best friend. Classes include practical exercises such as come back when called, walk on a loose leash, sit-stay, down-stay, place (boundary-stay), and behavior solutions.

Falls are the number one reason people end up in the emergency room. The facts about falls are alarming - and probably surprising:

·         One in three adults over the age of 64 falls each year.

·         Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in Florida residents over the age of 64.

·         Every hour there are 2 deaths and 251 emergency room visits in the US because of a fall.

·         20 - 30% of older adults who fall sustain serious injury.

·         Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury, fractures and hospitalization in older adults.

·         Even falls without an injury can limit one's mobility and/or cause a fear of falling.

Tuesday, February 18 – Dr. Paul Myers – Geologic of Living in Caldera River Valley – "Living safely in Boquete's rapidly evolving Landscape".   

 

Immigrants attracted to Panama by its ideal climate often remain naively unaware of its unique hidden hazards, many of which can be avoided by knowing the "warning signs" and making wise decisions.  This talk focuses on hazards with a geological connection; volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, and mega-floods.  In general, all of these can be mitigated by living on stable high ground with a sustainable, potable groundwater supply.  

I will show you how to recognize the warning signs using visual examples (slides) from the Boquete area.

Does fat make you fat? Are carbs good or bad? Is red meat unhealthy? Will salt give you high blood pressure? Is there any diet that actually works? Should I be taking vitamins? Dr. Harrison will discuss a dozen or so dietary controversies and examine both the evidence and the "fake news".

Dr. Harrison is board-certified in regenerative medicine and emergency medicine.  His practice, Rejuvacare PC, is located in Port Angeles, Washington.

 

Tuesday, March 10 – Quantum Theory for the Layman – Mike Petersen – For more than 100 years, the world of the quantum has been portrayed as being totally weird and mysterious. Richard Feynman, who won a Nobel prize for his work in Quantum Mechanics in 1967, was quoted as saying, "If you think you understand quantum mechanics, then you don't understand quantum mechanics." Well, if a Nobel prize winner says that, what is the layman to do?  Come to this talk, that's what!The quantum world will be explained in terms you can understand, and without using mathematics.

Mike Petersen has a B.S. in mathematics and has loved science, especially cosmology and Quantum Mechanics ever since he can remember. He was a volunteer speaker at more than one planetarium covering topics like Relativity, the Big Bang and more.

Plastic

The plastic should be free of organic material, free of liquids. NOTE: look for a number on the packaging that identifies type of plastic.

We accept:

#1 PET (number 1 in the triangle) (mainly beverage bottles)

#2 HDPE (number 2) (laundry detergent, shampoo bottles, etc.)

#4 LDPE (number 4) (bags for vegetables, supermarket bags etc)

#5 PP (number 5) (packaging of Philadelphia or cocoa for example)

What we cannot accept: Trash containing liquids

Important: Crush the material, so they take up less space and remove lids

Paper:

The material should be sorted by type of paper

The cardboard should be taken apart and trimmed

Registering to Vote and Submitting a Ballot

 

Registering to Vote and submitting a ballot is fast, easy, and can be done from anywhere in the world!

 

Start by confirming your voter registration with your state.  Some states require absentee voters to register annually so you may need to re-register.  Go to FVAP.gov to connect to your state's voter portal to register to vote, request a ballot, and more.  Once you confirm your registration, follow a few simple steps to vote in the 2020 U.S. elections:

 

1.   Request Your Ballot: Most states provide the option to request ballots through their state election portals, which you can easily access via FVAP.gov.  You can also choose to complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). The completion of the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives) including primaries and special elections during the calendar year in which it is submitted.  FPCA forms that are correctly filled out and include a signature and date are accepted by all local election officials in every U.S. state and territory.  FVAP's easy online assistant can assist you with completing the FPCA. 

Whether you request your ballot through your state's portal or the FPCA, we encourage you to select the option for receiving your ballot electronically (by email, internet download, or fax) when available.  This is the fastest way for you to get your ballot and ensures you have it in time to return a completed form before your state's deadline. 

 

2.   Receive and Complete Your Ballot:  States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office and states generally send out ballots at least 30 days before primary elections.  Most states allow you to confirm your ballot delivery online.

 

3.   Return Your Completed, Signed Ballot:  Some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically and others do not.  If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials by mail, you can do so through international mail, professional courier service, or through U.S. Embassy Panama's diplomatic pouch.  The diplomatic pouch provides free mail service from embassies and consulates to a U.S. sorting facility.  You will need to place your ballots in postage paid return envelopes or in envelopes bearing sufficient U.S. postage, in order for them to be delivered to the proper local election authorities.

If using the diplomatic pouch, ballots can be dropped off to the American Citizens Services section by Ave. Demetrio Basilio Lakas, building #783, Clayton, Panama City from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note that all visitors to the Embassy are subject to security screening and you will not be permitted to bring electronic devices, including cell phones, inside the facility.  Please note that it can take up to fourweeks for mail to reach its destination if sent by an embassy or consulate via diplomatic pouch.  All overseas U.S. citizens are advised to submit their forms and ballots accordingly.

The first clinic of the year for Amigos de Animales is coming up on Sunday January 26. As a reminder, our clinics are always on the last Sunday of the month, January through October. Some statistics: last year we spayed or neutered 2287 animals, 1161 dogs or 50.8% and 1126 cats or 49.2%, bringing our total animals to over 17,000 sterilized since 2005. To kick off the year and to make sure all our volunteers are ready for the year, we held an information and training session on Wednesday January 15. Everyone was welcomed to Animales and it was noted that 2020 is the 15th year of our clinics and service to the community of Boquete. Then Ruby gave a brief history of the clinics and emphasized the importance of safety and cooperation between the vets, the volunteers, and those who trust us with their animals. We gave an overview of how the process works and then each station lead spoke about their position and how it fits into the whole system. There are twelve stations that an animal goes through for the clinic, each one of them is vital for the safety and good outcome of that animal. That is why we want to make sure that all our volunteers are prepared and ready to work at whatever area they are in. Over the next couple months we will look at the stations and how they work in the overall picture and make Animales the outstanding team that it is. Appointments: Magaly is our appointment secretary and she is always working with the people who wish to register for the next clinic. Note that we do not make reservations or give out times, once a person comes to the clinic on Sunday, it is strictly a first-come/first served basis. But they must first register! HOW TO REGISTER Pre-Registration and Data Input: Andy Mitchell spoke about the new registration procedure and all the information that we have been able to access since he computerized the clinic. We can now see who brought the animal in, how much they paid (not everyone can afford our already low costs), where the animal came from, male-female, the age of the animal, which vet worked on what animal and other pertinent information. Once a registration number is confirmed at the Registration desk, Cary Trantham, enters in their number and begins the tracking of that animal for the entire clinic. Cary takes their money and they are given a tag which identifies that animal from beginning to end. NEXT MONTH WE WILL LOOK AT OTHER STATIONS IN THE PROCESS COMING EVENTS Calendar – 2020 might have just begun, but we are already thinking about 2021. These animals may be too young to be adopted out, need time to gain weight, or may need to recover from illness or trauma.
