[News Boquete] Geology Field Trips

Three more geology field trips, weather permitting, are planned in the month of June.  These will be the last trips of the season.

Sunday, May 31: Volcan-Cerro Punta.  This trip will study the unique features of Volcan Baru and its sister volcano, Tinsigal.  This is a full day trip and 4 wheel drive vehicles are a must.  

Saturday, June 6:  Jaramillo-Lucero:  This trip will look at the Jaramillo plate boundary fault and plug intrusions.  This will be a seven hour trip, 8 - 3.  4 wheel drive vehicles are preferred but not absolutely necessary. 

Friday, June 12:  Local field trip:  This is an introduction to the landscape around Boquete to help the participants understand the local geology and its effects upon the area.  This is a half day trip.  No special vehicles are required for this trip.  

All trips depart from the Visitor Center in Alto Boquete and assemble at 8 am.  If interested for any of the trips, please submit the following information:  

1.  Your name and the names of any other people in your party.

2.  If you have a vehicle and are willing to take passengers.  If so, how many passengers can you accommodate.

3.  If you will need transportation

Please submit this information to:  FieldtripBoquete@gmail.com.  All  field trips are free of charge although the drivers of vehicles may appreciate help with the gas, especially on the longer trips. The field trips are under the supervision of Dr. Paul Myers, emeritus professor of geology at the University of Wisconsin and geologists Martita Stearn and Michael Portigal.  

 All trips are weather dependent and will be cancelled if heavy rain is forecast in the field trip area.

Event: As of May 21, 2026, all U.S.-bound American citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who have been present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days of arrival in the United States must only enter through Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) for enhanced screening.

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will apply enhanced public health screening at IAD in response to the Ebola outbreak.

 

The Dulles requirement applies to all passengers, including U.S. citizens and LPRs, who were present in those countries.

 

Please be prepared for flight changes or cancellations.

• Read the Department of Homeland Security Alert on Enhanced Ebola Screening.
• Review Consular Information for Americans Regarding the Ebola Outbreak.

[News Boquete] Crash Course Spanish Class

New Crash Course Spanish Classes with Renny start on Monday

June 1 –July 10, 2026  two days a week (Mon. & Thurs.)

 It is a six-week class.

 This is a fun easy class. If there is any practice or homework, those with busy schedules will love having the option of doing them by email or Whats Ap at their convenience.

 As many people know, Renny, a degreed professional, owned a language school in David under contract with the Panamanian Government giving classes for them, and also had one in Houston. She is now offering several levels of Spanish classes in Boquete, two levels of Basic, and an Intermediate class. These are professional instructions with an easy, clear curriculum and the correct sequencing of material.

Location of the class is in Boquete

All of the Spanish Classes are called Crash Course Spanish

**** The Basic class meets Mondays and Thursdays starting at 9:30 a.m.

This Basic Class will get you speaking fast! 
It shows how the language is organized, and teaches the tricks of the language, the basics: pronunciation, some important cultural notes, phrases, vocabulary, speaking; fluid short conversations, how to ask and answer questions. You will practice and share tips, create full sentences, and learn this trick, how to speak without conjugating verbs. Workbook is included.

 

 The Crash Course Intermediate Class

**Class meets 2 days a week in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

You will USE your acquired Spanish language! You will speak in class, get tips for learning to listen and respond, you will have short exchanges, pronounce the difficult, role play, learn word order, expand your vocabulary, and engage in specialized classes to gain better listening skills. You will speak every day, learn a higher use of some verbs without conjugating, create interesting sentences, listen to songs, conduct interviews, and give short speeches. Learn by doing. Each student will translate for someone. It's time to do better at understanding what Spanish speakers are saying BECAUSE… the class also engages in "Train your ear” as well as “Practicing Speaking”, all of this as you learn more and more Spanish fast; you build the confidence you need to converse with others.

Pre-requisite for the **Intermediate Class :  you MUST be at the intermediate level of speech, no exceptions

 

**Intermediate Class To enter this class the following will describe your level of speech:

You respond to simple, direct questions or requests for information, can ask a few questions concerning needs and wants, and are able to express personal meaning by relying heavily on learned or re-combined phrases, repeating, or rephrasing what you hear around you. You know short and sometimes incomplete sentences in the present tense. At times you know you state things incorrectly but gain confidence because the Spanish speaker “got” what you were trying to say. You may be hesitant or inaccurate, whereby frequent misunderstandings arise.  When called upon to handle a variety of topics and perform serious functions you operate at about a 40% to 50% success range, and can sometimes respond in intelligible sentences, but cannot sustain full sentence exchanges. You know the meanings/translations (not the conjugations) of at least 75 verbs.

Hello News Boquete, I've known this since I planted my first cacao trees, but something about it has deepened recently as I watch guests move through the cacao grove during our workshops and farm tours: Chocolate begins as fruit. Not as powder, candy, or a finished bar, but as something alive, growing beneath the trees, surrounded by birdsong, humidity, fermentation, and seasonality. Earlier today, I reread the newest article I wrote for Newsroom Panama after seeing it published online, and I realized the piece is not really about chocolate at all. It is about the moment people begin seeing chocolate differently. The article follows one of our recent workshops from the cacao grove through fermentation, roasting over fire, hand peeling cacao beans, stone grinding, and tempering chocolate by hand. [News Boquete] The passing of Keith Woolford

💙 It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Keith Woolford — a beloved member of this community and a man who truly left his mark on so many of us. Keith was more than a long-time resident. He was the kind of person who made this place feel like home. Whether he was cracking a joke that could lighten any room, stopping to lend a hand without a second thought, or helping a nervous buyer drive off in the right car — Keith showed up, every time, with warmth and integrity. For so many of us, Keith was the first person we ever bought a car from. And that’s no small thing. In a world where trust can be hard to come by, Keith gave it freely — because he earned it. He knew his stuff, but more than that, he genuinely cared about the people he was helping. URGENT REQUEST FOR BLOOD FOR JIMMY SULLIVAN

Jimmy is in a critical health crisis and requires 2-3 pints of B+ or O+ blood immediately.

Please consider donating if you can. You must be between 18 and 65 years old.

The process is as follows:

Go to the new building at the Regional Hospital in David. 

Check in at reception, and you will be directed to the "Blood Bank" - you will need to talk to a security guard.

There is a second reception at the blood bank where your information will be taken. You can specify the patient for whom you are donating (James Sullivan - Room 227A). Please do not try to visit Jimmy at this time. 

You will then be given a form to complete, meet with a nurse, and have a blood sample drawn.

Once approved to donate, the process takes approximately 15 minutes.

Your blood donation will be delivered to Jimmy immediately.

If you plan to donate, please call either Chris Brown (+507 6427 9866) or Aileen Provan (+507 6649 0146). One of them will try to attend with you to help with the process.
