[News Boquete] Over 450 People in David Panama Report Vomiting and Diarrhea: Norovirus Outbreak Under Investigation

The Ministry of Health is investigating a norovirus outbreak in David, Chiriquí, after more than 100 people reported gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness registered in the district of David, province of Chiriquí, where 450+ cases of people with symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting have been reported since last Sunday. Dr. Pablo González, head of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health, reported that authorities suspect the outbreak is related to norovirus, a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis.

According to the specialist, patients have mainly presented with diarrhea and vomiting, with the duration of symptoms ranging between 24 and 48 hours. However, he clarified that the epidemiological investigation continues, as the origin of the outbreak has not yet been determined, nor whether the infections are associated with a common source of exposure.
They Recommend Reinforcing Hygiene Measures
Given this situation, the Ministry of Health reiterated its call to the population to reinforce prevention measures, especially frequent hand washing with soap and water, particularly before preparing or consuming food and after using the bathroom. Authorities also recommended maintaining proper food handling and going to a health center if persistent symptoms or signs of dehydration appear. The Ministry of Health indicated that it will continue investigations to identify the origin of the outbreak and adopt the necessary health measures to prevent further infections.
