[News Boquete] Avanza Futura Panama

A practical skill can change someone’s future Do you know someone who wants to learn a trade, improve their job opportunities, or build a better future for themselves and their family? *Avanza Futuro Panamá (AFP) <https://rotarysunsetclubofboquete.com/avanza-futuro-panama>* is a community education project of the *Rotary Sunset Club of Boquete <https://rotarysunsetclubofboquete.com/>*, created to provide practical, affordable vocational training for people who want to move forward in life. The program focuses on useful, employable skills such as *electrical work, plumbing and welding*, combining classroom instruction with practical training and exposure to real working environments. AFP is especially suited to young adults finishing school, people looking for a new career direction, and anyone who wants to gain practical skills that can lead to better employment or even the opportunity to work independently. Rotary has always believed in helping people develop the skills and opportunities they need to improve their own lives. AFP puts that idea into action right here in our local community. You may not need the program yourself — but you may know someone who does. *Learn more, apply, or share the opportunity:* https://rotarysunsetclubofboquete.com/avanza-futuro-panama AFP_Logo (Small).png logo RSCB (Small).jpg ___________________________________________________________________ The above message was distributed by /News Boquete/, a free subscription-based community service. /News Boquete/'s _*ONLY*_ public email address is news.boquete@gmail.com. [News Boquete] Urgent Memorandum: Major Medicare Changes Coming in 2027 – Impact on Panama Expats

REPRINTED FROM NEWSROOM PANAMA

Worried about Medicare in 2027?

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Significant market disruptions are coming to Medicare plans in 2027. Expats residing in Panama who utilize Medicare plans will see major changes—including plan cancellations, benefit reductions, and the complete elimination of Worldwide Emergency Coverage by prominent carriers. Action is required during the upcoming Annual Enrollment Period.

What You Need to Do Right Now

  • Watch Your Mail Close to September 30: Expect your critical Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). The more generous your current plan is, the higher the probability it is facing substantial cutbacks or cancellation.
  • Check for Non-Renewal Notices by October 2: This is the final date for disappearing plan notices to arrive. If your plan is canceled, you gain a Special Enrollment Period allowing transition to a Supplement Plan with NO health underwriting (no medical questions).
  • Mark Your Calendar for AEP: The Annual Enrollment Period runs strictly from October 15 to December 7. All valid changes take effect on January 1, 2027.

Carrier-Specific Cutbacks & Market Changes

  • United Healthcare: Dropping 13% of its plan offerings across 13 states. Crucially, client notices show they are eliminating Worldwide Emergency Coverage on certain plans. This directly impacts expats relying on international urgent care safety nets.
  • Humana: Projecting a loss of over 600,000 clients due to structural plan cancellations. Humana is completely exiting 3 states and 194 counties, offering no localized alternative substitutes for affected members.
  • Aetna & Anthem BCBS: Anthem already cut benefits to the bone last year and may face deeper reductions. Aetna plans are expected to undergo tightening and fine-tuning, especially regarding premium features.

Why is This Happening?

The shifts are driven heavily by Star Ratings and performance metrics set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Highly rated 4- and 5-star plans are receiving a share of close to $13.4 billion in bonuses this year. Conversely, carriers that failed to maintain high satisfaction ratings are facing severe financial drawdowns. To offset these losses, underperforming carriers are forced to aggressively strip away extra ancillary benefits like overseas emergency coverage.

Expert Local Assistance & Contact Info

Do not panic—there are always alternative 4 and 5-star carrier alternatives available. Reach out to your dedicated licensed Medicare agents specializing in expatriate healthcare coverage in Panama:

[News Boquete] Calling Acoustic Musicians .. Looking for Old Time, Bluegrass , Irish Acoustic Players ... ALL LEVELS WELCOME

We have a lovely little group of Old Time Acoustic players here in Boquete called the Pickled Beats.  We hold a weekly jam session on Tuesdays, which is all about just giving it a go ..  and although it can get messy, we mostly do just fine--making good music together and having a good time, which is the point of an Old Time Jam.  Some players do it by ear, and some with written music.  It all works and is a lot of fun.   We have been known to jam in public but performing for an audience is not our main purpose.   Old Timers play With--and For--Each Other.  All levels from newbie to expert fit into this kind of session.

Here is a link to a couple Old Time songs so you can see what kind of music this is.  (It isn't 60's folk).  Roots are in Appalachia, and further back to Ireland and Scotland, etc.   Primarily barn dance, contradance, buckdance music.

We have a tune list with over 150 Old Time and Irish tunes that we call from, so if you'd like I can send it to you.
The list grows as we add tunes.  The above link has one song (Valley Forge) already on our list, and one (Sadie at the Back Door)
that we will be adding (per our banjo player Juana's request) as a next up song.  So many great tunes to learn by playing.

Fiddles, Mandolins, Banjos, Guitars, Stand Up Bass are the standard 5 Old Time instruments, but right now we also have a melodica.  Other acoustic instruments can work well (including spoons and washboards).   It's all about the beat.

If you want to dig a little deeper into what Old Time is about, the Nashville Old Time String Band Association has a very descriptive website.   https://NOTSBA

if any of y'all might be interested in this, please contact Pat Thomas at 6563-1344 by Whatsapp.   Don't be shy, we don't bite

[News Boquete] HELPING AN ANIMAL ALSO MEANS THINKING ABOUT THEIR FUTURE - GLEYDA TAPIERO, PROUDLY BOQUETEÑA

🐾 HELPING AN ANIMAL ALSO MEANS THINKING ABOUT THEIR FUTURE

My name is Gleyda Tapiero. I was born and raised in Boquete, and today, for the first time, I would like to tell you a little about my story and share something I have learned after many years of helping animals in our community.

I have lived in Boquete all my life. I have watched our little town grow and change. I have seen many people arrive, make Boquete their home, and I have also seen many people leave.

Today, our community is made up of Panamanians and people from many different countries who have chosen Boquete as their home. As a Panamanian and a Boqueteña, I am grateful to those who have come to our country, become part of our community, and contributed their time, experience, generosity, and love to this place we all share.

Throughout my life, I have also witnessed another reality: abandonment, mistreatment, unsterilized animals, families with more animals than they can properly care for, and people who, for different reasons, can no longer—or sometimes simply no longer want to—take responsibility for their animals.

That is why I decided to help.

Today, I have approximately 50 cats in my home, many of them waiting for the opportunity to find a loving family. I also feed and care for approximately 50 additional cats living around a local mechanic shop, a place that over time has essentially become a small cat colony.

Many of these cats are already adults, which makes finding adoptive homes much more difficult.

When a pregnant cat appears, I try to break the cycle: spay the mother, care for her kittens, and find responsible homes for them, making sure they are sterilized when they reach the appropriate age.

After all these years, there is one thing I know for certain:

❤️ “HELPING AN ANIMAL ALSO MEANS THINKING ABOUT THEIR FUTURE.”

To me, rescue cannot simply mean feeding an animal today.

We need to ask ourselves:

What will happen to this cat tomorrow? What will happen five years from now? What will happen when I, as an independent rescuer, am no longer here or am no longer able to help?

Of course we can help a family going through a difficult time. We can assist with food during an emergency, a veterinary visit, medication, or sterilization.

But permanently assuming responsibility for animals that already have owners should not become the long-term solution.

Because if that assistance disappears tomorrow, the original problem remains, and the animal becomes vulnerable once again.

For me, the best kind of help is the kind that leaves something lasting behind: sterilization, education, responsibility, and adoption.

If a family has more cats than they can properly care for, we can help sterilize them to stop the cycle of reproduction and responsibly begin finding homes for those animals that can be adopted.

Helping does not always mean maintaining. Sometimes the most important help we can give is teaching.

And there is something else I feel very strongly about:

ANIMAL RESCUE IS NOT A COMPETITION.

It is not about who rescues the most cats.

It is not about who pays the most veterinary bills.

It is not about who feeds the most animals.

And it is certainly not about who can say they spent the most money.

It is about how many animals we can move out of vulnerable situations and, most importantly, what kind of future we are creating for them.

Over the years, I have also been fortunate to have veterinarians who have supported me and continue to work compassionately with the cats I rescue and help, including Dr. Cuco and Dr. Jansell.

They know my work. They know these are rescued cats or animals genuinely in need. Whenever possible, they have offered me very accessible rates, something for which I am extremely grateful because it allows me to use the resources I have responsibly and help more animals.

They also understand something that I consider fundamental: there is an important difference between helping and maintaining.

Helping means stepping in when an animal truly needs us—providing veterinary care, sterilizing, helping the animal recover, and working toward a sustainable solution.

Maintaining the same situation indefinitely without addressing what caused it simply allows the problem to continue.

That is why the amount of money someone spends should never be the measure of how much they help. The real results are found in sterilizations, recoveries, responsible adoptions, education, prevention, and lasting solutions.

Our goal should be simple:

❤️ EVERY YEAR, FEWER CATS SHOULD NEED TO BE RESCUED.

We do not need to compete. We need to collaborate.

Because one day, we will no longer be here.

And the animals will need what we did for them today to have created a future for them tomorrow.

This is how I see animal rescue, and this is how I want to continue helping the cats of Boquete and Chiriquí.

I also want to express my gratitude to DogCamp Boquete NGO, which has always extended a helping hand whenever I have needed one. Although their sanctuary is primarily dedicated to dogs, throughout the years they have also helped with cat cases whenever possible.

Now, in this new chapter as an NGO in Panama, they have not hesitated to seek support and donations specifically for cats and to develop new ways of addressing this need in our community.

I am also very grateful to them for dedicating space to my story and my work with cats in the first edition of DogCamp Magazine. It was very special for me to share a little about what I have experienced, what I do every day, and most importantly, why I continue doing it.

If you would like to read the article and learn a little more about me and my work with cats, you can find it here:

👉 DogCamp Magazine – First Edition

I am deeply grateful for their support and, above all, for understanding that helping animals should never divide us or become a competition. It should bring us together around one common purpose: creating a community where fewer and fewer animals need to be rescued.

If you would like to learn more about my work, share ideas, or work together in a responsible and sustainable way for the cats in our community, please feel free to contact me:

📧 Gleydacatlady@gmail.com

Let’s work together—not to prove who helps the most, but to build a future where fewer animals need our help.

With love,

Gleyda Tapiero 🐾

[News Boquete] We need your help !!

September 24, 2026

Dear Community:

We need you!

There’s a lot happening at Amigos del Parque, and we’re looking for volunteers who would like to lend a hand, meet new people, and help support Parque Biblioteca Boquete (Library Park).

Tastes from the Masters 2027

We’re gearing up for the 2027 edition of Tastes from the Masters, to be held on April 4, 2027, in the Grand Hall at Valle Escondido. It promises to be our biggest and most exciting "Tastes" yet—and it will take a great team of volunteers to make it happen.

Our first meeting of the Kitchen Cabinet, our Tastes volunteer team, will be held on October 10 at 2:00 PM on the second floor of the Biblioteca Boquete. Please RSVP by email to get your name on the list. Come hear about the many different ways you can help and find something that matches your interests, talents, and available time. There’s a role for everyone.

Volunteer in the Park

We’re also looking for volunteers who would enjoy spending a few hours in the Park on weekends—welcoming visitors, answering questions, serving as docents, accepting donations, and helping people discover everything the park has to offer.

We’re especially interested in building a regular weekend presence during the dry season, when the park is at its busiest.

If you’d like to volunteer in the park, please email us. Whether you can give a few hours or become more involved, we’d love to have you join us.

[News Boquete] $18,000 Per Kilo Generating More Than $3 Million in Sales at the Best of Panama Auction. Not Gold or Silver. It is Panamanian Coffee.

REPRINTED FROM NEWSROOM PANAMA

15 kilograms of Elida Geisha Torre coffee reached a value of over a quarter of a million dollars and became the most expensive lot; Lérida Waterfall Geisha Natural and Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Natural completed the top three places.

Panamanian specialty coffee once again reached extraordinary prices in the market with the international electronic auction that closed on the afternoon of Thursday, September 24, with 24,544 bids and a total value of $3,041,940 in sales, the product of 50 lots of 15 kilograms each.  The coffees that received the highest ratings in The Best of Panama competition participated: 40 lots of Geisha coffee and 10 lots of varietal coffees. The weighted average price ended at $4,055.92 per kilogram, while the maximum price was $18,004 per kilogram, a figure that remained until closing.

The auction generated sales.

The record was set by the Elida Geisha Torre, a 15-kilogram lot that sold for $270,060. The coffee received 736 bids and was purchased by Grand Cru.  The result means that just 15 kilograms of this coffee reached a value of over a quarter of a million dollars.

The 2026 edition featured buyers from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and America, according to reports from the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama.

Elida Geisha Torre Holds The Record.

According to Best of Panama reports accessed by this publication, the winning coffee was harvested at a stage of maturity known as “burgundy,” described as very ripe. After harvesting, it was pulped at midday and subjected to a fermentation process at temperatures between 14 and 17 °C.  It was then hand-washed and dried in a cold chamber, maintaining the same temperature range.  The process and the final price make the Elida Geisha Torre the most expensive lot in this edition of the auction, with a price per kilogram equivalent to about 4.4 times the final weighted average.

Lleida Moves Up To Second Place.

The most important movement during the last hours of the auction occurred with the Lérida Waterfall Geisha Natural, identified as GN-01.  The lot ended up at $13,505 per kilogram, for a total value of $202,575 , after receiving 1,849 bids.  The result represents an increase compared to the $11,893 per kilogram it previously registered and consolidated Finca Lérida coffee as the second highest priced lot in the auction.  The coffee comes from Alto Quiel, in Boquete, at about 2,000 meters above sea level. The best cherries were selected by flotation and subjected to cold fermentation. They were then naturally sun-dried on raised African beds.  The process sought to preserve the characteristic profile of the natural Geisha, with a floral and fruity expression.

Hacienda La Esmeralda Completes the ‘Top 3’.

Third place went to Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Natural, lot GN-02, which ended up at $10,024 per kilogram.  The 15 kilograms were sold for $150,360 after receiving 532 bids. The winner was SAZA COFFEE.  The Tumaco lot is located at approximately 1,750 meters above sea level, in Cañas Verdes, Hacienda La Esmeralda.  After harvesting and selection, the cherries were moved to a climate-controlled drying room, where temperature and humidity were monitored to allow for a gradual and uniform reduction of moisture. The coffee then underwent a resting period under controlled conditions before its final preparation for auction.

Café Elida Geisha Vuelta. Best of Panama.

The First Three, Account For More Than $622,000.

The three highest-priced lots together generated $622,995, equivalent to approximately 20.5% of the total auction value.  The Elida Geisha Torre contributed $270,060; the Lérida Waterfall Geisha Natural, $202,575; and the Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Natural, $150,360.  The competition was also intense in terms of bids. The Lérida Waterfall Geisha Natural (GN-01), which finished second in price, received 1,849 bids, while the Elida Geisha Vuelta, another natural geisha coffee identified as GN-03, accumulated 1,514 and closed at $10,008 per kilogram, with a total value of $150,120.

Café Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Natural ranked as the third best-selling coffee in Best of Panama.
