Dear Members and Friends of the Jewish Community of Boquete, David and Chiriqui,
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to a discussion of Jewish life in Panama, to take place on Tuesday, February, 9, 2016, from 3-5 pm at the Boquete Library.
The planned presentation with discussion will cover the History of Jews in Panama, the impact of the Inquisition and Holocaust in Jewish settlement and the diversity of Jewish life in Central and South America.
Our guest presenters are Robert Jacobvitz and Yakov Poliwoda.
Robert Jacobvitz received his MSW from Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social of Work. He has been involved in Jewish communal and social action efforts as a professional and lay leader in Cincinnati, Louisville, Oakland CA. Robert spearheaded a successful international effort to recognize Portuguese Consul General in France Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who saved 30,0000 individuals, mostly Jews, during WW II. As a retiree in Panama, Robert created and facilitates a book club for English speaking residents of Panama City, "Living as a Jew in the Caribbean and Latin America." He has also created the Panama Jewish Oral History Project.
Jacob (Yakov) Poliwoda, born in Venezuela, is a graduate of Simon Bolivar University, 2009 (Engineering cum laude), Caracas, Venezuela, where he represented the university at the Harvard National Model United Nations. An accomplished violinist, he currently teaches Middle School math and Judaic Studies at Magen David Academy in Panama City while studying for Rabbinate. Jacob speaks Spanish, English, Portuguese, Hebrew and Yiddish. He and his wife Hana, of São Paulo, live in Panama City.
We invite you and your friends to join us for what we hope will be an ongoing opportunity for Jewish involvement, cultural gatherings and resurgence of Jewish life, long dormant, in Chiriqui.
