[News Boquete] Clinic Information, news, activities and more

Clinic Information, news, activities and more

JULY CLINIC REPORT

On Sunday July 28, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 217 animals, 99 dogs and 118 cats with five vets working. It was a smooth running clinic, started at 8 and wrapped up around 4. And thanks to our new computer programs, we can tell you all sorts of other interesting information: of the dogs at this clinic, 71% were female and of the cats, 64% were female. That is good news for the animal population here in town. The average age of the animals brought in was 1.11 years and 56% were brought in by owners and 44% by our collectors. The majority of the animals came from Boquete, Dolega, and Potrerillos.

Our pre-registration system seems to be working very well: 176 animals were pre-registered while 41 registered at our desk. The biggest issue with registration seems to be the large number of no-shows and this is something we are trying to get a handle on. The number of animals pre- registered determines the number of vets we ask to attend and gives a good insight into how our day will flow and what our needs will be. We are asking that everyone pre-register but if you cannot come, please let us know!

We had some real rock star cats at this clinic: Chuck Norris was one, followed by Taylor Swift. Our owners love their pets and seem to enjoy them and care for them by giving them the gift of sterilization. Also, we had a very nice chat with a retired police captain from David who was so appreciative of our services – it is gratifying to see that our message is getting out all over Chiriqui and that the word is spreading.

GREAT NEWS AROUND THE WORLD

We thought that this was a great article, sent to us by Kat McKay – a real inspiration for Panama and the rest of the world!

https://www.thinkinghumanity.com/2019/06/holland-becomes-the-first-country-without-stray-dogs.html

This is what can happen when you put off your appointment for the Animales Spay/Neuter clinic. One day you have one lovely dog and the next day you have 10 new mouths to feed and find homes for.

This is such a great picture of these happy pet parents. Pat is the head of pre-op and Phil is our much-missed volunteer in Intake. Mom, Dad, and Bazooka are all doing fine!

HOW BIG SHOULD MY PET BE?

We get animals of all shapes and sizes and are happy to have them all. However, if possible we recommend that the dog or cat be at least 6 weeks old, over 2 pounds, and in relative good health. That ensures the safety and future good health of the animal.

EDUCATION IN THE SCHOOLS

We are so excited to get our Animales Education program underway! For the last few weeks Debe Emerson and Sherry Shirritt have revised and updated the original school program created by Joan James. They have gathered props, made coloring books, created posters, and counted beans to use as a visual for how many puppies can be born in 5 years (7,776)!!!

This program is geared at 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and will teach them basic animal care, the importance of spay/neuter, animal and human safety, and overall responsible pet ownership.

One of our volunteers, Katrina Kneebone, has already completed one session at the Palo Alto school and it was a great success. We will have more about this important initiative next month.

The Education team is also looking for another teacher and assistant to help Katrina with the presentations. If you would like to share your experience and time, please contact Sherry Shirritt via e-mail (sshirritt@gmail.com) and she will get in touch with you.

TRIVIA NIGHT AT ANIMALES

Trivia is back at Animales!!! After a long absence Trivia Night is once again being held at the Animales Events Center, we started on July 30 and will now meet every other Tuesday; doors open at 5 for food service, game starts at 6. Get your team together and join us for a fun night of challenging questions and team rivalry.

Hope to see you all there!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Since Animales is now hosting Trivia, we need help with preparing easy and tasty dinners and snacks for our guests. Let me know if you are interested in working the bar or kitchen serving or helping devise and prepare food for this very fun night.
