Food Start Update | | | | | Why is this family sitting on this huge rock at the top of a hill above their house and smiling you ask? They were not smiling about 20 minutes before this photo was made. Their food delivery from BVB was later than they expected and the entire family came to the rock by the road in Alto Quiel to watch for the car that was bringing their food. Once they saw the car their unease lessened. When the volunteers got out of the car with the bags of food, the family burst into smiles. Deliveries to our families are made in several ways. Some are by car, sometimes on main roads only. Sometimes the delivery is made by car but the domicile is in a sugar cane patch meaning the volunteers have to drive on a wide path that is a road in name only. Some of our deliveries are made on horseback. Our families expect their food deliveries at a certain time agreed upon between the family and volunteer. They get worried when their volunteers are late with the delivery, no matter how the delivery is made. | | | | | Betty Speyer – Scrabble Player, Animal Lover, and Incredible Volunteer Betty is a "Michigander" originally. During her previous life, she had a career in fundraising and marketing for various non-profit organizations which include the YMCA, public television, and the Henry Ford Museum. To get here, to Boquete, Betty did great deal of research on places to retire to, narrowing her choices to Panama or Ecuador. She visited both and fell in love with Boquete. She visited during the winter for four years then moved here permanently about five years ago. She became involved in BVB because she was looking for a charity to work with and "felt there could be no better cause than feeding hungry children." BVB has been the recipient of her energy and time for more than two years. So far she has served as a delivery driver, chair of the marketing committee, and as a monthly food packer. She feels two of the most powerful experiences she has had with BVB are "seeing the dedication and commitment of the volunteers, especially those who have been involved for many years, as well as the gratitude of the families we serve and their determination to remain positive in spite of their many challenges." | | | | In the United States, August 11 is National Sons and Daughters Day which is a day to celebrate the bond between parents and their children. In many families, parents express their appreciation for their children by sharing memories, talking with each other about their family, and showing gratitude for their children's unique qualities. If families with adult children live close enough to each other, they may celebrate the day by having dinner together, either at a restaurant or at someone's home. In all of Panama, there is no holiday such as this in August. There is the Aniversario de Panamá La Vieja or the celebration of the Foundation of Old Panama City, which is a local, public holiday on August 15th. Depending on their location, people may get a day off from work and businesses may be closed. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. For the families BVB serves, there is no holiday from food shortages nor is there a perk to schools being closed and workers having a day off because a day off is a day with no pay. | | | | | In the 1960s the Byrds sang "There is a season, turn turn, turn. And a time to every purpose…A time to plant, a time to reap." In the cyclical vein of which they sang, we are at the time of needing clean, large, handled bottles for our Food Start program. Please bring your donations to our table at the Boquete Community Market every Thursday in the Amigos de Animales building. | | | Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining. | | | | | | | | Copyright (C) 2024 Buenos Vecinos de Boquete.
