[News Boquete] The inside story on the robberies in San Carlos

You may have read in La Prensa Friday about the Tuesday, May 28 robbery in San Carlos, which is reprinted below. What you may not know is how the situation developed and how Alto al Crimen was involved.

Immediately following the attack, Rodny at the Boquete Hot Line received a call from a Boquete couple who were staying in the hotel in San Carlos and were among those robbed. Within an hour, our local private investigator was dispatched to the area for followup. Rob Brown, who many of you have met here in Boquete and is starting an AaC-type organization called Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Santa Clara, was called and immediately stepped up to organize the residents and lead the citizen-investigation. Rob called in Carlos Sanad, until recently the head attorney for the Policia National, to push the investigation to a conclusion.

This week Thursday, Rob is convening a community meeting to organize against crime. AaC members will be on hand to support his work. Ironically, this was the second time this same hotel has been hit by the same group. The first time, one of the participants took wonderful pictures of himself and his family on one of the stolen iPhones, which he didn't realize were being uploaded to iCloud. Despite having these crystal clear photos and knowing the identity of the suspect, in three months no arrests have been made - and now a second crime in the same place by the same people.

In the very near future, Alto al Crimen is looking forward to bringing Carlos Sanad to Boquete to speak at the Tuesday meeting about the new accusatory justice system and what it means. This will be a most interesting talk for us all.

The Alto al Crimen Team

Second armed robbery in same location fires up local residents

RESIDENTS of the San Carlos area near Coronado will meet Thursday, June 6, to devise security strategies after a second armed robbery at  the same location.

On Tuesday, May 28 five armed and masked men burst into the restaurant/hotel Rancho des Toro and brutalized and robbed, owner Joe Wilmoth and  four guests.

In an earlier attack 14 guests were robbed. Wilmoth had increased security after the first event including a silent alarm linked to the San Carlos Police
The thieves approached the building on foot and brandishing pistols knives and machetes and attacked the owner and guests, one was pistol whipped, and another punched in the face before they were tied up with internet wire. Wilmoth managed to press the alarm before he was punched out but, according to witnesses it took the police 50 minutes to arrive, a drive local residents say would normally take five minutes.
Witnesses say they they all carried guns, some had knives, some had machetes, and at least one had a bull-whip. The men gave orders in English with heavy Spanish accents and photographed the bruised faces of before leaving with a safe, mobile phones and personal effects. They escaped by car.
According to Gorgona Vecinos Vigilantes (Neighbourhood Watch), the same night as the Rancho des Toro attack, the offices of Rio Mar were robbed.
No arrests have been made and area residents are determined to find solutions to their security problems, claiming that "In the last year or so, there has been a murder, a couple of kidnappings, multiple break-ins and armed robberies targeted against foreigners in the interior…It is time to fight back."

Three community "safety" organisations in Panama are working together to fight these criminals:Neighbours Helping Neighbours (NHN), Alto Al Crimen (AAC) in Boquete and Gorgona VecinosVigilantes are working on this case together.
A support meeting is will be held Thursday June 6 at 5 PM at Ranch des Toro We hope to raise money for a reward for information leading to the arrest of these criminals, and for legal fees to support the prosecution of these thugs.
"There will be no weapons discussions, or sales pitches " says meeting coordinator Rob Brown. "There will be presenting our plan on how we plan to identifying these punks, have them arrested, and convicted."

[News Boquete] Dangerous Traffic Situation

Dear Fellow Residents,

I write this asking for your help to pressure those who have the power to make a change with the traffic situation now caused by the new road in Alto Boquete.  Today I saw another accident involving a motorcycle and car which seemed to be due to the dangerous traffic conditions with the double lanes of traffic on either side of the two lanes now open in Alto Boquete.  This is a very dangerous situation and one that is bound to cause more accidents if there is no control put in place to direct the traffic in a safer manner.  I´m not sure who would have the authority to control the traffic flow, now obligating oncoming traffic to only use one side of the four lanes.  Whether it is CUSA or the traffic police or the politicians, I think it is very important for everyone´s safety to control this situation a little better before there are more accidents.  If anyone could please help pressure those who can make a difference, I ask for your help before more people are injured.

Concerned Resident

Gracias

Residente Preocupado

[News Boquete] There's a new kid on the block....

There’s a new kid on the block and he’s got a surprise for you.

Save this message as this will be your monthly reminder.  Joseph (Owner of Il Forno’s Ristorante in Volcan) and Eric (The Crazy Cajun) have teamed up and are now at the BCP (Just in front of the theater entrance)

This Tuesday and hopefully every Tuesday after that we will have a wide variety of amazing goodies for you to try.  Come by the booth so that you can see for yourself

First of all let’s talk bread.  Joe uses only the best ingredients in his bread.  A combination of traditional and inventive can be the only way to describe some of his loaves.  For those of you who know bread then you know the labor that goes into making it.  A full day is allowed just to rise the dough.  This give you a baguette that actually has some density to it.   Using a wood fired brick oven (Like the traditional Artesian Bakers in Italy continue to do it) Joe patiently waits till it hits the right temperature and then starts the process.  Each baguette is consistent and delicious.  The finished product……  You tell me.

Now let’s talk Pizza.  Deep Dish to be exact..  We have found the perfect way to create a deep dish (and thin crust) pizza that is flash frozen upon completion.  This allows you to buy a frozen pizza, take it home, and have it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner without having to destroy your kitchen.  The finished product is restaurant quality as we only use the freshest ingredients.  Mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions all organic.  We use what we have from our organic farm when we can.  Below is the Pizza Menu.  I am only bringing 18 deep dish pizza’s and 9 thin crust pizzas.  We will make them to order so get your orders in soon!!!  Pre orders are the best way to ensure that you get what you want.

Check out our newest soups selection.  New Orleans Shrimp and Corn Bisque, Italian Minestrone, Cream of Mushroom, Cream of Broccoli, Cream of Chicken.  Perfect for those cool rainy days.

Here is the menu for this Tuesday:

Bread:

White Baguette  $3.00

Whole Wheat Baguette $4.00

Chocolate Strawberry Loaf  $6.00

Multi Grain Loaf (with barley, oats, wheat, corn, cranberries, and almonds)  $6.00

Banana Walnut Bread:  $5.00

Frozen Meals Ready to Heat:

Meat Lasagna (with mozzarella, homemade ricotta, homemade sausage, beef, and veal) 2 servings  $7.00

Egg Plant Parmesan  (the name speaks for itself)  2 servings $7.00

Italian Minestrone Soup  32oz (2 Servings)  $8.00

Cream of Broccoli Soup  32oz (2 servings)  $7.00

Cream of Mushroom Soup 32oz (2 servings)  $10.00  Now with even more mushrooms.  Includes Shiitake, Crimini, Portabello, Button, and Oyster mushrooms

Cream of Chicken Soup  32oz (2 servings)  $9.00

New Orleans Cajun Shrimp and Corn Bisque  32oz (2 servings)

Pizzas:  Remember this week I will have a limited supple of Pizzas.  If you pre order please specify Thin or Pan crust.

Pizza Crust Only ($3.00):   Build your own masterpiece.  Be sure to send me your creation.  If it’s a winner we’ll name the next Pizza after you!!

Cheese Please  ($6.50):   Pan style buttery crust, sweet sauce, fresh herbs (Basil, Parsley, Oregano), and loads of mozzarella cheese cover a layer sharp cheddar and Monterey  jack cheese to complete this trifecta of dairy delicacies.

Marghar-Etta  ($7.00):  This light pizza has no pizza sauce but instead brushed on Olive Oil, loads of fresh garlic, mozzarella cheese, sliced fresh tomatoes (exotic and organic ones from our garden when available), fresh sweet Italian basil, cracked pepper, red pepper flakes, and parmesan cheese.   Cecelia gives this one 5 stars.

Pepperoni Panama  ($7.00):  A carefully constructed pepperoni pizza that starts with the dough and layers sweet pizza sauce mixed with fresh basil, oregano, parsley, topped with mozzarella cheese and loaded with pepperonis.

Crazy for Spinach  ($7.50):  (Now with more spinach) this wonderful pizza is a blend of our organic spinach selection and includes Bloomsdale Longstanding, New Zealand, Giant Nobel, Italian Matador, Bordeaux, and Purple Passion Spinach.  Add roasted garlic, onions, cracked pepper, sweet pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese.  Voila!!!

Veggie Delight   ($7.50):   This Pizza is just what it sounds like.  Bell Peppers (Yellow, Green, and Red), mushrooms, black olives, onions, and minced garlic lie in between a bed of mozzarella cheese that sits on top of our herb infused sweet pizza sauce.   The methodical organization of the ingredients in this pizza is what makes this pie a treat for any palate.

The Works   ($8.00):   This pizza combines Veggie and Pepperoni into one edible masterpiece.

The Italian Garden ($8.00):  This delicious pizza creation just makes the most sense.  Sweet Italian pizza sauce, fresh basil, thyme, oregano, and parsley, loads of minced garlic, mozzarella cheese, onions, olives, fresh mushrooms, and Italian sausage slow cooked then seared and seasoned.

Carne-Val   ($8.00):    Meat eaters can finally rejoice. This Pizza is all about the celebration of meat and more meat.  This carnivore’s dream comes true with a combination of Italian Sausage, Bacon, Ham, well seasoned Hamburger Meat and Pepperoni.  All layered on top of a sweet pizza sauce, fresh herbs, and mozzarella cheese.

It Is Our Pleasure to Serve you,

Joe and Eric
