Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Newsletter March 2023

Join our KLIM for Kids Campaign!

What is KLIM? It's a nutritious, enriched powdered milk product that we include in our monthly food deliveries, and is the most expensive item we provide. It is a vital product, since most of our families don't have refrigeration, so they can make it up in small amounts as needed. Families with multiple children and elderly family members receive two small cans (360 grams, around $3.79 each – government subsidized), and with our client list currently at over 110 families, the costs mount quickly.

If you would like to help us defray some of these costs, please consider buying a can or two on your next shopping trip - most of the grocery stores and markets in the area carry it. You can simply drop it off at our table at the Tuesday Market. We're located in the Arco Iris building, across from Tap Out. We will also have collection boxes at Big Daddy's and Mail Boxes, Etc. If you want to make it fun, the next time you have friends over for cocktails or dinner, ask them to bring a can with them as their "ticket price".

Our costs per bag for food provisions has increased in the past few years and is now over $36 per bag, so your donation will really help us keep our costs manageable – we don't want to have to reduce the items we provide, or the number of families we serve. Hope to see you at the next Tuesday Market!

Family of the Month - Virceida's Family

Family of the mpnth

Meet Virceida and her family. Virceida, her husband Roberto and their seven children ranging in age from 5 months to 15 years live in a one room structure that is pieces of tin propped up with a tin roof. Their home is situated on agricultural property. They have no electricity and their source of water is an irrigation pipe that is attached to a faucet. Roberto is a day laborer and doesn't have a permanent full-time job. He has one part-time job and works whenever there is an opportunity. His income is not sufficient to provide for this large family.

Virceida has shown herself to be a conscientious parent who keeps the best interest of her children as her priority. The two oldest children are in high school and finished this school year with top grades and honors. Some well-intentioned neighbors gave the oldest daughter a used cell phone. Virceida reminded the neighbors that she should have been consulted first before her daughter was given the phone. She pointed out that she has noticed that students that have cell phones have their grades drop dramatically after they get their phones. Having her children do well in school is very important to her. She accepted the phone but said she is going to be in charge of its use. It was an astute intervention on her part and her children will definitely benefit from her vigilance.

All of the children are happy, healthy and lively. It is a joy to visit this family. When the food is delivered, they run to help with the bags and give a great welcome to visitors. They are all very appreciative to have the monthly food deliveries.

Volunteer Sharing Program

Buenos Vecinos means good neighbors, and our organization fulfills that promise – not only by providing food assistance to needy families, but by supporting and assisting other charities. As part of that mission, some of our volunteers attend the Handicap Foundation's Saturday get togethers. In addition to helping to serve lunches to the Foundation's clients, they entertain the younger attendees in playing games and making crafts.

Recently, members of BVB took a tour of Global Food Providers (GFP) farm and helped other volunteers harvest and process greens for the dehydrator. These dehydrated greens are "super foods" that Global Food Providers provides to our BVB families.
Check out the video for a look at the volunteers in action.

GFP, located in Rovera, an easy 45-minute drive from Boquete, is looking for regular volunteers who can help one or more days a month. Contact Daniel Daves at +507 6121-0591 on WhatsApp for further information on volunteering on the farm.

Come Meet Us at the Library

Meet some of our team on March 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Boquete Library, hosted by BCP Community Chat. Learn about Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, our mission, our families and more. Reserve your seat at http://eventsboquete.org/reservations

Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining
