Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Newsletter April 2023

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete

The KLIM for Kids Campaign is off to a great start. A big thanks goes out to the many people who dropped off either cans of KLIM or cash to purchase KLIM at our Tuesday Market table.

Cash and cans added up to 120 cans – over 60% of our monthly order! This is a great start, but since we distribute 192 cans of KLIM a month and 142 bags of food, our need for KLIM

donations remains high. Please consider keeping a can of KLIM on your shopping list.

Several people have expressed difficulty in finding the small, government subsidized cans,

which sell for $4.79 in local stores. It seems that Super Baru and Romero are the stores that have them in stock. If you would rather donate cash for us to buy KLIM, please visit our table in the Arco Iris building (across from TapOut) at the Tuesday Market.

Benilda is a single mom with eight children. She, like all mothers, wants the best for her children. It is a struggle for her provide for them. She works six days a week and her salary is well below the minimum wage in Panama. The school-age children all attend school and do their best to keep up their studies without electricity to provide light for homework in the evenings. The eldest son has completed high school, but has only been able to find sporadicwork. He contributes to the family income when he can.

Their home consists of pieces of tin propped up, with one wall being large sheets of plastic.

With the rainy season approaching, they are poorly protected. Inside there are five beds, and the four youngest children sleep on the floor. They had been living in better conditions, but were forced to leave the property when the owners decided to sell. They are grateful to have this shelter and are in good spirits in spite of the hardships. Buenos Vecinos is happy to be able to provide the family with food support that makes their lives a little easier.

Come see us!

Volunteer

Come visit us Tuesday mornings in the Arco Iris building, across from TapOut. We are now easier to find with our new look. We'd love to meet you and tell you more about our work, our families and about volunteer opportunities with us.

We are collecting large plastic bottles to be used for planting vegetables that we deliver to our families so that they can grow some healthy foods in their gardens. If you have any large bottles (5 liter water bottles, bleach bottles, etc.) please bring them to our table during Tuesday Market. We'll put them to good use and, since we reuse them over and over, they are being well recycled.

Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining
