[News Boquete] Spanish Help

Buenas Amigos,

We all know how important learning a little Spanish is when living in Panama.  We also all know that at a certain age (over 8?) the "learning curve" can seem a little steep for many of us.

I have added two pages to our website that can help you along.  The first page is common words and phrases for everyday life in Panama.  You can see that list here...

http://www.boquetelots.com/SpeakingSpanish.html

A second page is titled Construction Spanish and has words and terms (tools, parts of the house, building materials) that can be helpful when building or remodeling your home, or working with your local handyman or housekeeper...

http://www.boquetelots.com/SpeakingSpanish2.html

Lastly, we still offer our popular Folding Pocket Guide.  It has a nice list of common Spanish words and phrases that fits nicely in your pocket or wallet.  Just email me at info@boquetelots.com and I will reply with a printable sheet along with the folding instructions.

Saludos,

Dan Frey

[News Boquete] Animales clinic June 28, 2015

On Sunday June 28, 2015, we spayed or neutered 200 animals, 103 dogs and 97 cats.

This was supposed to have been a small clinic, or what passes for small anymore.  We were expecting 150 animals and with 4 vets we thought it should be a relatively easy day.

But one of our vets could not make it due to a family emergency and by mid morning we already had registered 180 animals.  When one of our collectors,  Carmencita arrived with another 25, we knew it would be a long day.

And it was, but as always our wonderful volunteers rose to the occasion, they arrived early, worked hard, stayed late and we were done by 7:30 that evening. The vets, too, are just amazing.  They started at 8:15 in the morning and worked all day without a break.  Such devotion and dedication of both the vets and volunteers is an inspiration to us all!

Our next clinic will be Sunday, July 26.  Call or email Magaly for your reservation number at 6563-8686 or email:  boqueteanimales@gmail.com  All reservations must be made to Magaly no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 23.  Together we are making a huge difference!  Alicia McGuigan co-president, Amigos de Animales  www.aadab.org

[News Boquete] Contamination of the Dolega and David water supply by a proposed shelter near the river

Panamanian officials investigated an animal shelter built with no permits or inspections of the septic tank.  They decided that this shelter was too close to residential homes and too close to the River Pedro, which feeds into the River Cochea.  This river provides both Dolega and David with drinking water.  They filed resolution 0042015, stopping construction on the shelter.
We all love animals and want to help them.  This particular shelter will not help animals, because it is in an area where the animal waste can infect both the other dogs in the shelter and humans as well.  This shelter is located at the end of a residential area.  You have to go down four unmarked streets and down a huge hill that is very steep to get to this proposed shelter.  It would be difficult for people wanting to drop off or adopt animals to find and access it. Where will the volunteers park their cars?  How will our little residential road handle all that traffic?  The shelter is right in the middle of a residential area where the noise would be unbearable for the residents.  It is on the edge of the Olimpo Wildlife Preserve.  The bacteria that comes from the dog waste could also infect the wild animals in the preserve.
The people who built the shelter don't want to listen to the Panamanian officials and build the shelter in a proper commerical area, where; by the way; we are all willing to donate our time and money to make sure the shelter will succeed.  We want the shelter in a commercial area that is easy to find and bring dogs to, easy for the public to adopt dogs from, and where the animal waste can be properly handled.  They are going to hold a news conference tomorrow at 11AM (Wednesday July 1) at the Dolega Municipal building, right on the road from Boquete to David.  They are going to try and sway the public opinion in their favor and over rule the Panamanian Officials.  Please help us to stop them.  They are not looking out for the benefit of animals or of people.  They are only looking out to get what they personally want.  This shelter is not safe for the dogs or the humans around it.  All we need is a little of your time. Please help us take a stand against this total disregard for Panamanian Laws.

[News Boquete] Irene Haines Update, Tuesday, 30 June

Irene is a little better today.  They have extubated her -- the tube down her throat to help her breathe has been removed.  She has an oxygen mask providing her with moist oxygen.  The moisture helps "thin" the congestion still in her lungs.  Her bed is currently vibrating, which also helps loosen the congestion.  She is not yet talking, which is to be expected, as I'm sure she has a VERY sore throat.  The nurse told me that Irene may be moved into a "regular" room in about 3 days if she continues to make progress.

The necessary payment to the hospital has been made, thanks to all of you!

On a personal note, I cannot thank you all enough for the hugs and encouragement you've given me.  Your timing has always been perfect -- just when I've needed a hug or a kind word, you've been there.

Brandy Gregory
