[News Boquete] BVB Newsletter September 2018

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Newsletter September 2018.

A Big Thank You to the Boquete Community!

Our latest Buenos Vecinos Food Drive in front of Romero's Food Market in Boquete August 18th was a great success, thanks to generous community and even tourists who stopped by to learn more about our food charity and to donate cash and selected non-perishable food items. By the end of the day, BVB had collected enough to support one of our needy families for more than a year. We appreciate your big hearts!

We want to also thank those Coconut Foundation Members who recently renewed their annual pledges to support BVB for a minimum of $360 a year. And hats off to N & N Catering (Nairn Cutten and Nancy Halbert) who donate all of the profits from their catering jobs to Buenos Vecinos and two other deserving charities. Their substantial donation means that our clients like the Family of the Month featured below will continue to find BVB groceries at their door throughout the year. BVB could not exist without this kind of support. Thank you!

There's Still Time……….

It's not too late to buy your first raffle tickets, or even additional tickets, to win this beautiful 60" X 60" handmade Indonesian batik quilt or this decorator 21" X 25" brushed metal seashell mirror. Look for the Buenos Vecinos table at the Tuesday Morning Market. The winners will be announced on stage before the Tuesday Talk on September 25th and need not be present to win.

Join Us at the Health Fair (and the BVB Bake Sale)

Boquete Health and Hospice is sponsoring the Boquete Health Fair at the Feria across from the BCP on Sunday October 14th 1-4 pm. This important event will feature representatives from the health community, doctors, laboratories, pharmacies and other health supporters. Free blood pressure checks and glucose testing will also be available.

Buenos Vecinos will be there selling delicious homemade baked goods. All proceeds from these sales support BVB's monthly food distribution to some of the area's neediest individuals and families

Family of the Month - Meet Benilda´s Family

A large tree hides this bamboo house from the road and the outside play area is worn down to the dirt by many feet. The family who lives here, Benilda and her eight children still miss the father who abandoned them more than a year ago. Benilda struggles to find work, but earns only $50 a month cleaning houses and ironing clothes; $32 of those dollars are already designated for monthly rent and water.

Her oldest child, 18 year-old Alexander, is now in trade school learning how to be an electrician. He wants to help his family, and he is optimistic that he'll be successful. His sixteen year-old sister, Yamileth, will finish high school next year. She wants to learn accounting so that she can help support the family, as well. Her fourteen year-old sister, Yaneth, has confessed with a smile, her own vision of someday owning a beautiful dress. The other children, Reinaldo, 12, Juan, 10, Jeronimo, 9 and Maria, 7, also attend school.

Six year-old Jhahicha is very excited to start school next year when she will proudly wear a uniform like her brothers and sisters. Until then she spends her days at home with her mother. When Mom works, a sibling stays home with Jhahicha.

The family rushed inside the house to find their best clothes before we took the accompanying photo. Benilda said that the food Buenos Vecinos donates to their family "is a great blessing and she is very grateful."

How to help?

If you would like to help our clients and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, we would appreciate your donation of any size. It is important for you to know that we are a small all-volunteer force with no administrative or overhead costs. Every dollar of your donation goes to the purchase or storage of food for our clients.
When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a "good neighbor". When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), you will become a Coconut Foundation member as an acknowledgment of your concern and generosity.
