[News Boquete] All Bans on the Sale and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages Are Lifted (Again)

Sales and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages in All Districts Must Comply with National Level Executive Decree

On Thursday, May 7th, we dispatched a notice about the lifting of the national level ban on the sales of alcoholic beverages. A link to the official announcement was provided in that notice.

Later in the same day, the Mayor of Boquete signed an executive decree (Decreto No. 016, dated May 7, 2020) prohibiting the sales and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the District of Boquete. Several other mayors issued similar decrees.
A link to the official announcement was provided in that notice.

Late breaking information as of Friday evening, May 8th, is news that President Cortizo issued an Executive Decree (Decreto Ejecutivo No. 612, dated May 8, 2020) that basically nullifies local municipal decrees banning sales and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

In other words, the ban on alcoholic beverages sales and consumption is being lifted across the entire country. The purchase of one bottle of wine, or one six-pack of beer, or one container of liquor will be allowed throughout all of Panama. There is some wiggle room for interpretation and implementation in this latest Executive Decree, but we expect such issues to be quickly resolved.

Below is a link to the Chiriqui.Life (CL) website with details of this new development. It is a long read, but the essence is given in the above paragraph.

It is our understanding that this new Executive Decree will become effective as of Monday, May 11th. That date is partly based on the fact that this weekend is another total lockdown, and so people should not be out and about buying anything. Only first responders, front line staff, and certain logistics and exempted categories of people (e.g., Panama Canal staff, etc.) are allowed to be out during this May 9th and 10th weekend.
