[News Boquete] GEGOLOGY FIELD TRIPS ARE BACK!

EGOLOGY FIELD TRIPS ARE BACK!

The 2024 geology field season resumes on January 30.  A list of field trips and classes is shown below. All trips and classes are free.  Field trips are led by Dr. Paul Myers, Emeritus professor of Geology at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

There have been many changes in the content of these activities since last year.  Please  read their descriptions carefully. If you have been on previous trips you may want to repeat one or more of them this year. Note: Volunteer drivers are required on all field trips. All trips will be caravan style.

Field Trips

 1. Local Boquete Field Trip (5 Hours)

A tour of the main geologic features of the Caldera River and the east side of Volcan Baru. The main purpose of this field trip is to acquaint you with the local geography and geology and help you to learn how to "read" the history of the landscape.

2. The Volcan Baru Caldera at Volcan (6 hours)

This field trip investigates the structure and history of Volcan Baru with special emphasis on its caldera northeast of the city of Volcan. This trip requires vehicles that can safely negotiate poor roads.

3. Jaramillo-Gualaca (5 hours)

The older terrain east of Volcan Baru is the focus of this trip. In this terrain igneous activity is related to the intrusion of magma along old faults.

4. The Evolution of the Caldera River

A study of the ongoing processes river evolution. We will explore erosional and depositional features of the river valley, including landslides and other features that indicate recent surficial movement.

Clases

1. Volcanic Geology 101 (4 hours)

This class covers the basics of geology in a volcanic terrain with a 3-hour illustrated lecture and a 1-hour lab. The class includes the study of rock and mineral specimens with a hand lens.

2. Petrography: The Study of Rocks Under the Microscope (4 hours)

Note: Participants should already have taken Class #1.

Under the microscope, thin sections of rock reveal intimate relationships and histories of the minerals in the rock.
