[News Boquete] A little more clarity on the new requirement for expats -- A Catch 22

Eric of 2 Guys went there with their documents and said, if your address on file is different than your current address, you get fined.
So it's a catch 22. You go there to update your address, and they fine you because it is different from the address on file!

Received from the Newslady's lawyer and friend:

Dear friends,

Many of you have shared your concern about the "new" Immigration rule to get your domicile registered, or a $100 fine will be imposed for the first time.

Please allow me to explain a few aspects:

  1. It is not a new rule. The Immigration Law from 2008 established the obligation to report to the Immigration authorities, any change of address or domicile.
  2. If you have not changed your domicile and you still live in the same place reported when you obtained your residency permit, this rule does not apply to you.
  3. If you in fact, have changed your domicile, please do not enter into a panic mode, because I am sure, hundreds of thousands of residents will rush into Immigration offices and they simply don´t  not have the capacity to handle hundreds of thousands of domicile updates at once. Be patient and hopefully, Immigration will find an expedite, hassle free alternative for you to report the change.
  4. Unfortunately, this is a personal affair, so if there is no other option but to go to Immigration, sadly you will have to take the time and go to an Immigration branch near you and report your new domicile.
  5. One other thing is, Immigration may or may not request evidence of domicile, such as a Utility Bill, but I know that many expats' residents live on rental properties with no utility bill with their names on it. Another important aspect that Immigration must figure it out.

Get in touch with your immigration attorney or your current attorney, if different, to find out about new developments on this important matter. Again, be patient.
