i'd like to report my experience with Boquete's recycling center, after first confessing that previous experiences with recycling in Panama, had not left me particularly hopeful. while i can't vouch for where things go after they leave the center, the place itself has given me confidence in it. it is well organized, well attended, the people are very friendly, and extremely helpful. things are sorted, clean (bring them that way-it can't possibly be part of the service), and separated. i see piles of collected cardboard, bags of plastic containers, and cardboard boxes of jar lids. i've had people help me look for specific sized lids, and after asking for some of the same things for a few weeks in a row, who have held things back for me. anything you want from there is free. i've gotten ice cream cartons with lids, for storage, and water jugs i want to use for growing plants. my husband got several very large pieces of thick cardboard for when he has to get under the car, and a broken hot water heater. that heater is exactly like a broken one we have. ours needs a switch and theirs had a switch. we can pirate the parts useful to us and return the rest. when you bring things in, someone meets you in the parking lot, helps with your bags/boxes, does the separating for you, and thanks you! it's the best effort i've seen in all my years here and i've gone from skeptical to very appreciative. at least be willing to turn in, have a look, say hi, drop your empty plastic bottle collection, and give them a try:) it's a great way to be community conscious and support a mission central for repurposing some good things that are currently out of use! bring them your rectangular Bonlac ice cream cartons; they're some of the best!
