[News Boquete] BCP Progress Report

Come Play with Us at BCP

BCP Progress Report
Looking forward to the BCP future

Breaking News from the President and Jardinero Executivo

by Mark Heyer

When I took on the job of overseeing the renovation of the BCP organization, it soon became clear that BCP had grown from a simple theater company to a Theater, Event Center and Market, each a semi-independent business unit. There are plays to put on, a building to manage, renovations to be done, and businesses to be grown.

When Paul and Hope Morgan came to BCP to take on the theatrical duties, I agreed to help out and try to make sense of the rest. They have expertly put together an engaging new season of theater and are well into rehearsals for the first production. However, as we all became aware of the magnitude of the tasks at hand, we realized that they could only deliver a great season if they were free to focus on theater. For that reason, they decided to leave the BCP board (and all of the day to day grief around remodeling and managing a building) and take the positions of Artistic Directors. I could not be happier for them and for BCP.

Meanwhile, we are recruiting other board members to address the Event Center and Market sides of the BCP business. Today I am very pleased to announce the anticipated appointment of Robert Brauns to the BCP Board. With a professional background in running art galleries, his primary responsibility will be to coordinate with the artistic directors and outside arts groups in the development of the BCP lobby and facilities as an attractive and inviting space for local artists - and an inviting space to hang out with our friends on a daily basis. And a more inviting venue for , theater eventsweddings, parties and art openings.

Over the next days and weeks we will be adding other new members to the Board - volunteers who can address specific areas important for the long term success of BCP. In particular, I am interested in adding a Board member to take the lead in growing the Market and another expert in the marketing of organizations and theaters like ours. If you would like to contribute to the success of BCP, long term or short term, in these or any other way, please let me know personally and confidentially.

The key to long term success for BCP is increasing the utilization of the facility as a center for the arts. Event Center rentals are key to paying BCP's rent for the facility. The Tuesday Market, while moderately successful, is underperforming in terms of both keeping the BCP doors open and maximizing profits for the vendors. And of course the Theater needs to grow and succeed.

As the corollary to Murphy's Law states, "Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse." We found that neglected maintenance had left the BCP buildings in a state of serious decline.

In order to promote the overall growth of the BCP, we have undertaken a program of targeted renovations, focused on those that will produce the largest and fastest returns for BCP. The new stairway and parking lot will enable us to accommodate more customers as we crank up the marketing for the Market. Painting and decorating the lobby and Hex Room will make them more desirable for rentals, not to mention much nicer places to hang out for all of us.

Our goal is to develop the BCP so that the building can be open and available to the community most, if not all of the time. This will in turn open up new vistas of possibility for a coffee shop, ongoing art exhibits, live music, an ongoing venue for ticket sales and much more.

In short, the BCP is moving from being a disjointed, now and then affair to an ongoing and synergistic true center for the arts. And this is not some far off dream - the key elements, both physical and management, are being put in place as we speak.

Either we step up and make the BCP a self-sustaining organization or it will fade slowly into oblivion. I have personally volunteered too many hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to the BCP to simply stand by and watch it fail. But my time and energy is limited. All of us who care about the BCP and what it means to the community need to stand up now and help make it successful, in ways large and small.

If you have ideas or comments, or would like to help the BCP succeed, please contact me directly.
