Alert: May 5 Panamanian Presidential Election

Event: Panama's Presidential election will take place this Sunday, May 5. Although it is expected to be peaceful, the Embassy advises U.S. citizens to exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations, as even peaceful demonstrations have the potential to turn violent without warning.

While most demonstrations in Panama are non-violent, the Panamanian National Police have used tear gas and/or riot control munitions in response to demonstrations, particularly when roadways are blocked, or in cases of aggression against the police.

Actions to Consider Should Demonstrations Occur:

  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Exercise caution when traveling and plan routes accordingly.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
