| | | | Client of the Month Yasmina Zuniga | | | Yasmina Zuñiga has asthma, is unable to work, and has no income. Her family is rather large, and she spends her time taking care of them. Her daughter, Noemi, gave birth to Yasmeily 5 May 2024, making Yasmina a young abuela (grandmother). Yasmeily is a beautiful baby who is now motherless because Noemi died on 1 June. Yasmina is dealing with the overwhelming loss of her daughter and trying to cope with a two-month old baby in addition to her other family members. Not only does Yasmina need nutritional help for her family, Yasmeily needs all the things a baby normally needs, from clothes to formula. As she grows, the things she needs will grow as well. We are glad that our partner, the Boquete Knitters and Quilters, were able to provide newborn clothing and bedding items and that we were able to provide nutritional items for the family, which frees Yasmina to use any appropriate donations from other sources for Yasmeily. | | | July Celebrations, Mostly Food Related | | | In the month of July there are many specially designated days in the US concerning food, from the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest to celebrations of National Hot Dog, Ice Cream, Baked Beans, Picnic, and Grilling Month just to name a few things. July 1 was National Gingersnap Day. Here in Boquete (and in all of Panama) we don't celebrate those things but there is the Festival Patronales de La Virgen de Santa Librada in Las Tablas. There is a festival within a festival, the Festival de la Pollera, the traditional dress. The families we serve most likely do not attend that festival. Instead, they are trying to survive another month. We are grateful for your ongoing support. That support enables us to continue to deliver non-perishable goods to approximately 125 families in the area we serve. There are many more families in need of our assistance; we are barely scratching the surface of the dire poverty here. If you would like to sponsor a needy family for $45 per month, just scroll down and click on the PayPal logo, which will take you to our donation page. Simply choose the amount of your gift and check the box if you wish to make it a recurring gift. You don't need to have a PayPal account to do this. Your monthly support will have a huge impact on a family struggling to put food on the table. | | | | | Meet Heather Paton & Larry Bunyard Heather and Larry have been in Panama about two years and moved here from Dallas, TX. Larry is a Louisianian by birth while Heather is from Washington State. They met at Gonzaga University and have been married nearly 32 years. They moved to Panama because the low cost of living allowed them to retire early and they fully enjoy the "simpler, slower pace of life." In addition, they appreciate that Panama "is a safe place to live (gun violence is not a daily concern), that it is relatively easy to visit relatives in the US, and that the US social security income isn't taxed by Panama and that they are offered a jubilado (retiree) discount." They picked Boquete because of the weather and the large expatriate community. When they were researching and getting documents in place, they encountered a pair of BVB volunteers at the market. One month after moving here, they became involved with BVB. They donate time and money saying "we started making monthly cash donations to BVB in 2022. It is an easy way to help local needy families. BVB is an honorable organization of concerned residents pooling their volunteered time and efforts to help alleviate hunger for local needy families. We've seen first-hand all donations to BVB are used to buy food for monthly distribution to BVB's client families. Our monthly cash donation ($1.33 a day) to BVB is immediately put to use to buy dry goods at deeply discounted negotiated prices from a wholesaler. If we spent $40 at the grocery store, we couldn't buy the same quantity of food BVB can. We love that BVB helps mothers have the dignity of providing a nutritious meal to their children." | | | | Chef Gigi of Chef Gigi's Table in Alto Boquete donated 300+ bottles to BVB in June. We are very grateful for the bottles, which can be used in our food start program as well as to hold potable water for our families. Again, many thanks to Chef Gigi's Table for remembering us and cleaning the bottles for our use. | | | Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining. | | | | | | | | Copyright (C) 2024 Buenos Vecinos de Boquete.
