[News Boquete] Hand turned Panama Hardwood Bowls & Other Pieces at the Tuesday Market

It's not too early to start thinking about holiday gifts, but these hand-crafted items are great for birthdays, anniversaries, or any trip back to see friends and family and time of year.  All pieces made by hand by David van Harn, an award-winning woodturner who moved to Boquete from Sonoma County in California's north-coast wine country nearly three years ago.

There are over 700 species of wood in Panama, whose rainforests are among the most biologically diverse in the entire world.  Some of theses beautiful woods are available from lumber yards and mills, but I keep finding new and different woods which are not  normally carried by regular wood suppliers.

Some of the these woods turn well , and some do not. But I take the time and make the effort do work with certain woods that other turners won't touch.  Some wood is too hard, other woods chip or are prone to tear-out.  Others are nearly impossible to bring to a smooth surface.  I work all of my turnings to as as smooth a surface as possible, and then buff on a final coat of pure Brazilian carnauba wax - no chemical finishes are used.

Items for sale:

Round and square-edge bowls.  The bowl shape is  a very popular form with collectors of high-quality, carefully finished turnings.

Stands for tea-light and taper candles, and some are reversible with a 1-1/2" tea light hole on one side and a 3/4" hole for traditional taper candles on the other side.   A great way to show off the beauty of wood.

Bottle stoppers can be used for wine bottles, as well as many larger bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.   Even some cruets and some of the local honey bottles will accept a standard cork-sized bottle stopper.   The gold coffee scoops with turned wood handles are a perfect for your own use - or they make great gifts to go with Boquete's world-class  coffee.    Honey dippers and honey spoons also available.

So stop by and see an incredible collection of gorgeous wood on the back terrace at the Tuesday Morning Market at the BCP Theater Center.
