When I invited friend Gregory Louganis to visit my home in Panama in January for some relaxation and a charity benefit, I had no idea it would eventually lead to a media storm when he decided to liquidate his investment of his time and talent in his Olympic Medals and start a journey of rediscovery and recalibration for the next part of his journey - as our guest in Panama for however long he might choose. There are now tens of thousands of comments about his decision - many heartfelt but a few downright mean. Yet Greg has been transparent - a retired Olympic athlete he needed to add to his retirement nest egg — his medals are much the same as a startup business one might sell at retirement following investment of decades of time and energy. As he evaluates his future in the quiet lush cloud forest of our home, Rio de Amor, let us celebrate his courage and resilience. Let us show him the same kindness, compassion and respect he has always shown us. He dedicated many years of his life to competing on behalf of the USA to bring home the pride of 5 Olympic medals. His journey has not been an easy one - but this humble man has remained kind, caring and respectful to his fans and the public. Please give him kindness, peace and space as he sorts through his future plans.
