According to physicians and pharmacists in Boquete, both foreigners and Panamanians are using alarming amounts of benzodiazepines. These are drugs prescribed for sleep, anxiety, panic, mood, and involuntary movement disorders.
Most people who allow benzodiazepines to enter their lives have little idea of the implications. Often they are not even aware that a medication with a promised-filled name such as Calmatron or Nervistop carries such a highly addictive drug. Pharmaceutical companies have downplayed the true dangers of benzodiazepines and have not provided users with a clear understanding of what is entailed in stopping these medications. Over time these drugs begin producing the very symptoms they were designed to stop. This is the paradoxical effect and increasing the dose only increases the dependency.
Commonly prescribed benzodiazepines include
Alprazolam Xanax Tafil Tranquinal Clonazepam Rivotril Clonex Klonopin Chlordiazepoxide Librium Diazepam Valium Lorazapam Ativan
The Z Drugs Zaleplon Sonata Eszopiclone Lunesta
"The Z drugs although molecularly distinct from traditional benzodiazepines still act on benzodiazepine receptors and produce similar side effects and have similar withdrawal problems." (Prof. Heather Ashton)
YOU CANNOT JUST STOP USING THESE DRUGS, as withdrawal symptoms can be severe and dangerous
YOU CANNOT FIND A SMALL ENOUGH DOSE IN PANAMA IN ORDER TO SAFELY TAPER DOWN TO ZERO
HOWEVER It CAN be done and I have done it.
1. Download a free copy of Professor Heather Ashton's manual NonBenzodiazepines. Professor Ashton has written the gold standard on getting off of these drugs.
2. Work with a physician and know your current state of health and medical liabilities.
3. Before you get to the smallest dose available here in Panama, order a milligram scale from Amazon, The Portable Gemini-20 (about $20)
4. Gather your support system and educate them.
5. Call Evelyn (6752 2283) for more information and support.
