Our mission is to provide low cost spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, and to promote the general welfare of animals in our community and surrounding areas. | | | | AMIGOS DE ANIMALES BOQUETE PANAMÁ OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER | | | CLINIC MUSINGS FROM OUR PRESIDENT Spotlight on the Ruby McKenzie Clinic Building The Ruby McKenzie Building is more than just a venue; it's a cornerstone of our community. Every month, on the last Sunday, it transforms into a bustling hub for our spay and neuter clinic, with dedicated volunteers setting up the day before. This vital service helps control the pet population and ensures healthier lives for our furry friends. But the Ruby McKenzie Building's role doesn't end there. For the rest of the month, it opens its doors to a variety of events that enrich our community. The new Boquete Community Market, held every Thursday, has quickly become a favorite, bringing in a diverse array of vendors and enjoying strong support from locals. Recently, the building hosted a teenage entrepreneur event, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity of our young people. Many attendees, myself included, left with bags full of unique and innovative products. From birthdays and weddings to celebrations of life and countless other activities, the Ruby McKenzie Building stands as a versatile and welcoming space. We are proud to provide a facility that supports and strengthens our community in so many ways. Thank you for being a part of this vibrant community and for making the Ruby McKenzie Building a place where memories are made and shared. Leslie Sherling, President | | | 30,000 AND COUNTING! Our September clinic saw another amazing milestone - we sterilized the 30,000th animal since we began back in 2005. This is why we no longer have packs of homeless dogs and groups of feral cats roaming the streets of our community. The luck 30,000th animal is a dog named Way, who lives in Jaramillo and was brought to the clinic by Rosemary Lumy, one of our very dedicated collectors, and his owner, Rosa Ortiz. Rosemary has collected over 100 animals from then Jaramillo, La Estrella and La India areas. As yoiu can tell, she is tireless in her efforts to help needy animals. Thank you to our chairman and founder, Ruby McKenzie, our President, Leslie Sherling, all our amazing vets, our wonderful donors and the many dedicated volunteers who make our organization the huge sucess it is today. | | | Thank you, Mayor Eduardo "El Mello" Rodríguez ! On Sunday, September 21 Amigos de Animales held a spay and neuter clinic in Caldera. For the first time in 20 years a mayor of Boquete paid for dogs and cats living at the Caldera dump to be sterilized. For the $360.00 donated by the mayor, 18 dogs and 4 cats were sterilized There were also 90 animals brought from the two local schools! The new mayor of Boquete and his crew came and mingled and shared their support of Amigos de Animales and our mission. Thank You! This time, our dedicated volunteers and vets ventured to the Volcancito school, where 23 dogs and 37 cats were successfully sterilized, further reducing the potential for homeless animals in our community. | | | Strengthen Your Bond With Your Dog Learn how to strengthen your bond with your pet, one ear scratch and paw shake at a time. It's not hard to love the adorable pup you've brought into your home, but establishing a mutual, trusting bond can take time. So, as a pet owner, it's important to prioritize activities and care tasks that deepen your connection with your furry friend of any age, from teaching them a new trick to nurturing them with grooming care. Looking for inspiration? Tap through these top six ways to bond with your pet. Give them pets and cuddles Physical contact is important for establishing a bond with your pet. Spend time showering your dog or cat with cuddles, belly rubs, and ear scratches. Teach them a new trick Teaching your four-legged friend a new trick will make you proud. It's a great way to spend time with them, build trust, and instill valuable skills of discipline. Plus, you'll enjoy having a new command up your sleeve. You might think training and trick-teaching is for puppies, but guess what? You can teach an old dog new tricks. Check out these fun and popular tricks any dog can learn. Play games with them Schedule pet-human playtime for games like fetch and tug-o-war, or set your pet up with a snuffle mat—great for mental stimulation and sharpening their nose. Keep them groomed The truest path to your pet's health and happiness is nurturing and caring for them. Regularly taking time to wash and brush your pet's fur will keep them clean, polished, and feeling loved. This may not be your dog's favorite activity, but if you're gentle and patient with the process, they may learn to love it — or at least appreciate the attention and affection they're getting from you. . Exercise together For dog owners, bringing your pup along on a run or hike ensures they're getting the quality time and physical activity they need to stay happy and healthy. Bring them to a dog park One-on-one time with your pet is necessary for building trust, but so is making sure they're socialized. Add a trip to the dog park to your routine so that your canine companion learns how to interact and play with other dogs and humans (and maybe makes a few four-legged friends along the way). Bonding with your pup will be even more rewarding when they've developed their social skills with outsiders! | | | GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY This month we're featuring a hard-working couple: Allison and Chad Wildman How did you meet and how long have you been married/together? We met online in 1999 and were married 9 months and 10 days later on the Millennium day (1/1/00)! So we have been happily married for 24 ½ years! | | | | Your position/title with AdA: Chad – Recovery Supervisor for the dogs Allison – Recovery Supervisor for the cats. (I also submit monthly contributions to the AdA newsletter and consider myself the "Unofficial Photographer for AdA). Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? Chad – I supervise and assist the various volunteers to help the larger dogs recover from having been anesthetized for their sterilization. I have some medical training which helps me identify medical issues with the dogs, such as issues with breathing or bleeding. I also cut the dogs' toenails as needed and carry the dogs out to their owners. Allison: I help to oversee the recovery volunteers; I make sure they know what to do and how to do it properly, have the supplies they need, and then return the sterilized cats (and small dogs) to their owners when they are awake and ready. I also put together a "get to know the team" submittal so that the AdA newsletter is not just filled with statistics, but rather with some information about the many interesting and talented people who volunteer. Finally, I take lots of photos at the clinics and post them to the Boquete Community Facebook page to underscore the great work that Amigos de Animales does and try to solicit volunteers and donations.
