Thanks to leftover funds from last year's flood relief fundraising, we were able to jump into action immediately. Within three days, we had purchased and packed food for 35 families. We also consolidated, sorted and offered a selection of clothing for men, women and children along with hygiene products and housewares donated by community residents. Operating out of the site of our future community food pantry, a warehouse behind the Toledano company, across from the big gymnasium in Los Naranjos, we coordinated with other organizations in the area to get the food delivered to the families that needed it as quickly as possible. About 60 families were served, including 15 families in Palmira, which was very hard hit. Eight families being housed and fed by the Mayor's office in the gymnasium came over to the warehouse and left happily with bags of clothing, blankets, coats and hygiene products. A group of students from the school across the way came to visit to see the work we were doing, A good lesson for them in community involvement! In addition to the food purchased by BVB, we received a donation of non-perishable food items from Banco de Alimentos Panama, a food bank in Panama City that will be helping us stock our food pantry in Los Naranjos. Their donation allowed us to pack 37 of the 60 bags of food distributed and included ten 40-lb. bags of broken pasta pieces, six of which BVB volunteers transferred into gallon-sized bags to be given out to families, perfect for adding to soups and stews. The remaining four were provided to local churches and soup kitchens: Paula Cerveny, in Volcancito; Reubin Stuger, 7th Day Adventist (owner of back2Eden in Caldera); Wil and Lucy, Hillside Baptist Church in Alto Boquete; and Pastor Steve serving Alto Quiel and Bajo Mono. Our deepest appreciation to all who donated money and clothing to this effort, and special thanks to: · Banco de Alimentos Panama · Ana's Distribudora · Heidi at Mike's Global Grill · Valerie Green, Finca Verde · LN Escuela · Amigos de Boquete · Brandy and Scott at Tap Out Trivia | | | | | | | Super Greens - A Healthy Boost for Panamanian Children | | | | | Dr. Daniel Daves from Global Food Providers was the guest speaker at the October BVB meeting. Dr. Daves shared valuable insights about Super Greens, a nutritional supplement developed by his organization Global Food Providers, a non-profit food dehydration operation based in Rovira, Panama. This organization is the largest farm dehydration center in Central America and operates fully on private donations. Global Food Providers was founded out of concern for the many Panamanian children lacking proper nutrition due to their typical diet, which is heavily based on rice and beans. To address this critical issue, the organization grows nutrient-rich greens including moringa, mustard greens, kale, spinach, and collard greens. These fresh greens are carefully dehydrated into a powder form, creating an incredibly concentrated supplement. One tablespoon of Super Greens powder equals the nutrition of one pound of fresh greens. The recommended use is just one tablespoon three times a week, which can easily be added to everyday foods such as rice, soup, or beans without altering the flavor. This makes it an effortless way to boost the nutritional quality of meals for children and families in need. Super Greens are available for purchase at the Tuesday Market, offering community members access to this supplement. Thanks to the dedication and vision of Global Food Providers and Dr. Daniel Daves, we have a tangible way to help combat childhood malnutrition in Panama.
