Sunday, the 30th, was the day for the big November 28 Boquete Independence Day parade. For the first time in several years, we actually had a nice day for the event and everyone had a great time.
As is my habit, I photographed the parade again this year and with great pleasure pass the photos on to all of you.
Click here to see the parade. Viewing tip: if you click on slideshow you will see them full screen. Then press "pause" and you can go through them one at a time using the arrow keys.
At 10AM, President Varella made a fine speech and he is clearly a friend of Boquete, but I will leave it to others to analyze his comments. If you watch his body language, Mr. Varella is clearly a very friendly and approachable person.
As those of you who have seen my previous albums know, my coverage is idiosyncratic and arbitrary. These parades are dominated by the young women (the future of Panama) and a chance for everyone involved to show their stuff with lots of drum and bugle support. I find the unselfconscious honesty and pride of these parades to be source of great pleasure and consider it a privilege to honor the efforts of our fellow countrymen and women. The rest of the world could learn some lessons from the Panamanian tradition of parades. Tip: Check out the faces in the crowd...
Finally, on the way home, I caught sight of the latest addition to our town firefighting equipment, a beautiful little fire truck named Tia Kathleen, acquired from the United States, is now at home in Boquete thanks to the tireless efforts of our own Phil McGuigan. Way to go Phil!
Please enjoy the 2014 Boquete super parade!
