[News Boquete] Update on DIP Vehicle

To Our Mutual Friends of the Boquete Police:

First, I would like to apologize for the lack of an updated communication from me with regard to the donations you all have made to see to it that we are able to get an additional vehicle on the road for safety, this vehicle being the 2008 Nissan Frontera 4x4 for the DIP (Department of Investigations of Panama).  I recently had a major surgery I have waited a long time for, and was only given half a day's notice before the procedure.  I am able now to be out of bed doing light activity and will be at the market tomorrow to pick up some things if you should see me and wish to ask questions.

This morning I made a trip to Value Motors to see Junie about the progress of the vehicle as I had been told on Friday evening that we would know something definitive on Monday.  Junie was in David and I was told he would return at 1:00, so I called and I got voicemail and left a message for him to call me with a status.  In addition, I called the DIP and they said they had planned to talk to him at 2:00.  I never received a call back.

What I do know is that the vehicle was moved from the front of the police station and into the bay at Value Motors where the engine was removed and sent to the machine shop for evaluation.  The vehicle has since been moved back to the police station.

If Junie had heard from the machine shop, I am sure at that point I would have been notified as he would then need the money to pay that expense since it is not Value Motors, and he would also know what is required to fix the vehicle.  I will try once again to contact him tomorrow in person to see if there is additional news yet.

I am so sorry this whole process is taking so long, especially in light of the criminal activity, but I am glad that our DIP has been given a vehicle to borrow from David in the meantime to aid in the captures and deter our recent crimes of burglary and robbery.

To give you an update, I have $1751.23 still locked in my safe awaiting a list of the parts needed to repair the vehicle.  The part donated by the vice mayor will not be able to be utilized as it is not a compatible part unfortunately.  The plan is not to buy a new part, but rather to seek a used part hopefully from within the police cars which do not run because they also are in need of repair.  In addition, I have a couple of extra generous people who have said they will come to our aid if we have not yet collected enough money for the repairs.

Again, I am so very sorry that I don't have specific news for you and a timeline to give out.  It's so hard to get used to the "we're in Panama" phrase when people's lives, safety, and possessions are on the line.

I do promise to put out another update, even if it is tomorrow, if I can find out additional information to report.  Please accept my apologies.

Very Warmly,

Marguerite Heffner and all the other friends of the Boquete Police
