Another step in protecting our wonderful community

Reply to: Alto al Crimen <info@altoalcrimen.org>

Yesterday, Wed. August 24, 2011, marks another milestone in the campaign of Fundacion Alto al Crimen (Foundation to Stop the Crime) to make and keep the District of Boquete a safe and crime-free place to live.

About two months ago, we became aware that the DIP, one of the investigative branches of the police with an office in Boquete, did not have a computer with which to communicate with their peers in David or with our newly-computerized Boquete Hot Line service. Alto al Crimen put a call out to the community and within a day, Phil McGuiggan offered to purchase a new computer with all the accessories for donation to the DIP.

Yesterday the new computer was delivered and installed by Hastor Computers at police headquarters in Boquete. Among many of the police officers from Boquete and David who were present, in the picture from left to right are: Major DeLeon, the boss of the DIP from David, Phil McGuigan, the largest contributor to Fundacion Alto al Crimen, Commissioner Guerra, second in command of all police in Chiriqui, Lt. Patanillo, the new officer in charge of Boquete police and Caesar Sherrard, whose Tuesday Meeting talk catalyzed the formation of Alto al Crimen and whose ongoing efforts resulted in this new cooperative project between the expat community and the police (not to mention the successful capture of Ozzie!).

The new computer will not only allow the DIP to communicate more effectively, but also allow our Boquete Hot Line to communicate directly via email and more effectively utilize the AAC Resident Database. Ultimately though, the real meaning of this exercise is building cooperative and trusting relationships between the expat community and the rapidly advancing Panamanian society. We were all struck by the cordiality, professionalism, openness and cooperative spirit of the Panamanian officials. We all have much to offer each other and the doors are opening rapidly.

Most of all, we want to thank all of you, the citizens of Boquete, who are playing active and constructive roles in making our community what we want it to be. Thank you for your support of Fundacion Alto al Crimen and all of the other worthy organizations that are shaping our unique way of life in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Alto al Crimen

Fundacion Alto al Crimen is a Panamanian non-profit foundation dedicated to reducing the crime rate in the District of Boquete and helping citizens improve their home security. It is supported entirely by donations from the residents of the Boquete area.

The Boquete Hot Line service is a service of the Foundation. Call 5477-6662 for 24/7 bi-lingual emergency support to report a crime, medical emergency or call for roadside assistance in case of an accident or breakdown. The operator will forward your call to to the relevant Boquete emergency service.

The Boquete Resident Database works in concert with the Hot Line to speed response to your residence in case of an emergency. When you provide your location information to the Database, you are assigned a unique permanent number, which can be used to identify yourself instantly to the Hot Line in a time of need. All you need to do is call the Hot Line and say, for example, "This is number 575 and I need an ambulance!" The operator will then look up your location information and convey the directions to your house to the relevant emergency service. To be included in the database, send an email to residents@altoalcrimen.org including the names of everyone living at your house, your preferred and backup phone numbers and concise directions to your home. You will be issued a permanent ID number by return email. Be sure to write the number on your house phone, or put it in your cell phone as something like AAA ID xx so you can retrieve it quickly if necessary.

To make a donation and help keep these services going,  put a check made out to Fundacion Alto al Crimen in an envelop and drop it off at Mailboxes Etc., box 13112. Or simply reply to this email and we will arrange a time to receive your donation.
