Today we had a fantastic presentation by Prof. Ariadne Batista (PhD) and her group of young scientists from The Unachi University in David. Their current research ( in partnership with German and Swedish scientists) centers on analysing the biodynamic elements of various plants,marine animals and bee groups in the Chiriqui region.
Many health claims have been made about medicinal plants, algae, omega 3's in fish and the benefits of honey and Bee pollen. The lab is currently setting up protocols to study the chemical characteristics of these various elements. They are also studying for the possible use of plants as natural pesticides rather than using the regular toxic cocktail of chemicals or GM modified seed.
Given Chiriqui's wealth of biodiversity , this is a very exciting step forward for both the local area and Panama.
Prof. Batista explained that one of the center's goals will be to use the research lab as an opportunity to further the development of young scientists locally.

It would have been nice to see a better turnout for this presentation, given all the whining and carry-on we see and hear locally about " standards" etc . But thank you to the 10 people who did attend...and trust me, we will run this presentation again but this time I will get Lee to headline it as
"Ways to make Plata ($$) with Science".
No doubt that will get some bums on seats.
