[News Boquete] U.S. Notary now available via Skype

Many folks in Chiriqui have wondered how they can get a document notarized by a U.S. notary without having to go to the U.S. Embassy to do it.

In the past, the answer always was that there was no other way.

Now, things have changed. The state of Virginia has legalized a totally electronic notary service. All you need is Skype software on your computer and a Skype camera.

Basically, you use Skype to dial up the Virginia notary service, show them your passport as identification and then sign the document in front of the camera. You then scan and email the document to the notary in Virginia. If you don't have a scanner, Mail Boxes Etc will do this for $.50 for you. The notary affixes their seal to the document and emails it back to you.
The cost is $165 but that is cheaper than a trip to Panama City plus the $50 U.S. embassy fee.
