Jenny & Paul Saban

Reply To: Penny Barrett <pjbarrett@aol.com>

Many Boquete residents will remember Jenny and Paul Saban who put their life savings, blood, sweat and tears into building the animal refuge Paradise Gardens on the Volcancito Road. Jenny and Paul were involved in a fatal accident while turning off the Pan-American Highway into Price Smart at dusk. They were accused of causing the accident and several witnesses (of suspect veracity) testified against them. Rather than face time in a Panama jail (not a happy prospect) they fled back to their home country of England.
Now, years later, we get the news that Betsy Carrera, representing ASSA Insurance CO pursued the case and won and the witnesses were exposed as liars and Jenny and Paul have been exonerated. She was able to prove by the distance that the Saban's car was moved by the impact that the other driver was speeding well in excess of the 40 KPH limit, possibly as fast as 90 KPH. In spite of the lying witnesses she obtained other witnesses that testified that car was driving without lights. The driver of the car was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
Of course, nothing will make up for the money they lost and the stress they endured during this ordeal. When I informed them of the outcome of the court case they responded with a very nice email:

Thank you for sending this Penny. The news had filtered through to us earlier today.
It`s good to know that the lawyer was able to continue fighting in our absence and indeed win the case. We doubt that would have happened had we still been there. In fact we left because so many lawyers told us we had not a hope in hell of winning.
Thankyou again
Best wishes
Jenny and Paul

  1. It is good to understand that the Panamanian legal system does not judge expats guilty by default. I hope Paul and Jenny can regain ownership and return to their again deserted animal refuge (Paul, please get in touch with me).
