To our caring community of Boquete,
Our friend, Francisco (Franc) Lugo suffered a serious accident on Monday afternoon at a construction site, and taken by ambulance to Chiriqui Hospital, where he spent five nights, being released today. The surgeon and staff at the hospital were very professional (Franc nearly severed his thumb), and remain optimistic that he will regain use of his hand.
Franc is a veteran of the US Navy; we are hopeful that he might be assisted by the VA; however, he did not have local insurance. As you can imagine, his medical bills will be expensive, and the loss of his modest income as a gardener and general handyman will be impaired during his recovery.
We are asking the community to assist with financial contributions, and referrals for house-sitting and translation services during this time; Franc is fluent in Spanish. He has a car; he will be able to drive soon. For those of you who may not know him, his friends can attest to his honesty and trustworthiness, as well as hard-working ethic.
I am acting as point person for contributions and job referrals; please contact me. A special thank you goes out to the caring ex-pat couple whose home was the scene of this accident and the long hours they have spent with Franc's situation; the blood donors who contributed to his medical needs, and the congregation at San Juan Batista where Franc is a faithful member. And, not least, to his Panamanian lady, Isabel, who has been constantly at his side.
