This Week

Mar 19:   Al Sprague will discuss Painting Panama- A lifetime love affair. He's been painting for 57 years. Al Sprague is an internationally recognized artist. His paintings of the Panamanian polleras are exquisite, as are his Panama Canal ones. Here is a link to his website: www.panamaart.com that gives his biography and other information about his work.

Mar 26   John Cole will make do  rerun of his presentation on Moneyball since it now showing on television here.

Starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, Moneyball is the story of Billy Beane, longtime General Manager of the Oakland A's in 2002-03. From a book by Michael Lewis, the film follows the historical happenings during and after a successful season and how the club had to retool after several free agents left for other teams. Many of the baseball scenes were populated with actual baseball scouts. In a flash back sequence Billy remembers when he signs with the NY Mets as an 18 yr old high school graduate. The baseball scouts in this flashback were Tom Gamboa and myself. All our lines and the lines of most scouts in various baseball related scenes, were ab lib. There was no script provided because the writers did not know what to say and left the scouts to their own devices.

This will be a behind the scenes look of how baseball scouts populated the process and how John Cole started as a technical advisor and moved to a speaking role in this film. We will look at how movies are made, the tremendous number of support people it takes in the process and how a number of baseball scouts like myself tried not to get stepped on in the process
