Mariela's husband died in March, 2014. Now she is alone with her five children: Abymila aged 12, Dioselina 11, Bertina 8, Maicol 6, and Magdiel aged 4. The youngest, Magdiel, suffers from intestinal problems.

Their single room concrete block house is in El Salto, part of an indigenous compound on a finca. The four oldest children go to school. Mariela works on the finca when possible; there is no other income or extended family support.

Buenos Vecinos de Boquete has begun supplying food to Mariela and her family. They cook outdoors on a wood fire; there is no electricity. Of  particular importance to the younger children is the monthly supply of Klim, a powdered, nutritional milk product.
