Procastination and Effort = Breaking Out of the Rut

From: Gilberto Barria Vallarino <gbvdco@gmail.com>

Procrastination and Effort
Breaking Out of the Rut

"All activities are judged to be difficult or easy, possible or impossible, attractive or
unattractive, by virtue of the effort which we perceive as being inherent in them."

                 Deane Juhan, Job's Body

When you contemplate how to go about your daily activities, how do you feel?

How do you think about the effort it will take to:
  • Go for a 30 minute walk, run, do some yoga or exercise
  • Play golf, go bowling or play bridge
  • Drive downtown....to Dolega....David....the beach.....
  • Do the laundry, dishes, take the garbage out
  • To dance, paint, write....think....dream....
When confronted with the effort it takes to use our bodies for a particular activity, it's
our nervous system that generates an almost automatic response. It appraises the
condition of our muscles, bones and joints. It's an unconscious reaction about which we
are largely unconscious.

Have you noticed how your muscles, bones and joints influence your sense of effort?
Even when there is nothing wrong with the body itself, we unconsciously gauge our
response to effort through how we perceive the state of our body. For instance, while
considering joining a local dance class (that could be an exciting opportunity) we
procrastinate, using, irrelevant distraction to talk ourselves out of the project.

Amazing as it may sound, all it takes to change into a more positive direction, is a little
bit of movement, a change of posture. It can start with wiggling the toes while still in
bed, making foot circles, moving the hips from side to side and twisting your spine left
and right. If you keep going, soon energy will start flowing through your body and as a
result your overall attitude changes.

If you've been feeling in a rut, you probably have noticed the effort it takes to take
action. By focusing on the body in particular ways you can overcome this inertia.
These actions can be learned. Remember that pain is part of life, however suffering is
optional. Consider that there is no pain that will last 100 years or a body that will resist
that. In time you may start imagining yourself going in the direction you want your life to
go.

As you move your body, your imagination will be activated and visa versa: As your
imagination is activated, your body will respond with energy. When your start paying
attention to how your body moves, your mental focus and inner dialogue will become
more positive.
