[News Boquete] Rabbit Hole and the Coming of Age of BCP

There is certainly a place in our entertainment lives for cake and ice cream, cabaret and slapstick. But there is also a place for gourmet fare, pathos leavened with humor, a substantial meal that leaves you by turns laughing, crying, thinking and ultimately satisfied. Rabbit Hole is just such a theatrical feast and marks 2013 as the coming of age for the Boquete Community Players and its new theater.

The gourmet recipe is provided by David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer Prize-winning script, masterfully executed by a group of mostly newcomers to the Boquete stage. Laurie Richards, Jane Derry and Kelsey Kinzer take us on an emotional roller coaster played against the foils of Rick Simmons as the husband of an aggrieved couple and Julian Bonfiglio, Boquete's rising-star actor. It is a delight to watch and definitely a must-see.

While the three women, daughters Becca and Izzy and their ditzy mother Nat, deliver spectacular performances, I wanted to especially mention Howie, played by Rick Simmons. As described in the program, Rick took on this role as a "therapy" for his inability to "interact in normal society." His heroic performance is testimony to the skill and dedication of director Jim Hatch to empower ordinary people and change their lives by putting them on stage. I have watched him do it over and over, including to myself. If you want to broaden your personal horizons and feel better about your capabilities, just step forward. Even though you may prefer walking across hot coals to standing up in front of an audience, once you have done it you will understand it to be one of the most fun and satisfying things you can do in life and will be eager to do it again.

Not only is Rabbit Hole a wonderful play, the Boquete Community Players Theater itself is shining as a true cultural center for us all. Under the willing leadership of Bob Schmucker, vision of Creative Director Jim Hatch and will lots of hands-on TLC from Lane Suaraz, the theater has been transformed into a wonderful place to meet and celebrate the talented people of Boquete. The new lobby is warm and comfortable for schmoozing with friends, the theater seating transforms the viewing experience and in Rabbit Hole, the professionally designed and expertly constructed sets set a course for the future.

Complementing the theater-going experience of Rabbit Hole is an exhibit of photography from the newly-formed Boquete Photography Club. The walls are filled with big, bold and beautiful prints, exceptional images from your friends and neighbors in Boquete, many of whom are just learning the art of photography. It's worth a trip to the BCP Theater just to see the photos and thanks to Ron Elkind, who landed in Boquete, decided we needed a photography club, organized it and pulled together this wonderful show in barely two months.

We are truly blessed to live in this community of talented and motivated people.
