[News Boquete] Gallery-quality wood turnings available at the Tuesday BCP Market

July 29, 2013...

From David van Harn

I have a new bench-top wood lathe
up and running here in Boquete, and a collection of local wood ranging from plain and simple to beautifully colored, figured, and spalted.   I turn a wide variety of small to medium-sized pieces in styles from bottle stoppers and honey dippers to tea-light candle holders and bowls.  Prices start at five dollars.

All items are sanded to a very fine grit and then buffed with soft cloth wheels.  The finish is a buffed-on coat of pure, food-safe carnauba wax from Brazil that gives the wood with a silky smooth finish.  The patina that ranges from semi-gloss to a high gloss, dependent on the wood itself.  No petroleum products or other synthetic chemicals are used.

Below are some examples of turnings that will be available on Tuesday morning.  Many of these artistic objects are made from rare and beautiful pieces of wood, so if you like something, be aware that another one like it may not show up again.

Even if you are not in currently looking for a beautiful artisan woodturning for your home or as a gift, stop by my table at back section of the BCP Market to see some of the incredible woods of Panama.   The pictures do not do justice to the beauty of the wood.

FEATURED ITEMS:

A spectacular pair of highly-figured kira tea light candle holders from a piece of wood given to me by Jose "Arte" de la Cruz, the renowned Volcan wood artist and sculptor.  Kira is a type of granadillo, but unlike the darker, straight grain common variety of granadillo, kira is just as hard, but much lighter in color and often with beautiful figure.  This pair of simple and elegantly curved kira candle holders were turned from a spectacular piece of wood.  I spent extra time to sand and finish them carefully to gallery standards.  $25 each (or $40 for the matched pair.)

A sampling of other pieces available:

Square, winged guanacaste bowl - simple and elegant - $36

Lidded cypress box- a rare and gorgeous piece from a type of wood that is usually quite plain - $24.

Figured cypress bowl- from the same piece of wood - $25

Other items:
Bowls, platters and artistic turnings other turnings ranging from $8 to $250.
Premium chrome-base bottle stoppers
- $15.

Standard silicone-base bottle stoppers - $8 to $12.
Algorrobo honey dippers - $8.
