A brilliant, intricate and ingenious mathematical proof. Around this seemingly abstruse concept, the BCP Theater Company led by Jim Hatch, provides proof that brilliant adult entertainment is flowering in Boquete.
For any playwright, the art is in creating nothing but words that will be spoken by actors before a live audience. In David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning {Proof} from 2001, the words are masterful and the story brilliantly constructed.
But the proof of brilliance is in the performance, and the Boquete cast of {Proof} does itself proud. One of the enduring pleasures of live theater is watching actors grow and develop their talent. We have seen them all before in lesser roles - we remember Bill McGraw and Kelsey Kinzer in the memorable skit about alien dating services, and Morgan Fraser as the frustrated jumper in Benchwarmers. In {Proof}, these talented young actors spread their wings and keep us on the edge of our seats with an acting tour de force that is gripping from the first line to the last, more than 700 lines in all, performances as intricately and ingeniously crafted as the mathematical proof itself.
Always the curmudgeons curmudgeon, Jim Hatch fades in and out as Robert, the sometimes alive, sometimes dead, brilliant but demented mathematician whose two daughters, Clair and Catherine and graduate student protégé Hal grapple with the unproven and problematic legacy of his life work and their individual relationships with him - and most entertainingly with each other. {Proof} is a first class play and to have it so excellently performed right here in Boquete is proof of why we love living here. Not to be missed.
Finally, {Proof} is the first BCP production that is going on the road - to the community theater in Coronado, where all performances have already sold out. We can be confident that we are sending them the best that our community has to offer, proof that live theater - real people standing up in front of a live audience and creating an entire world before our eyes - has a bright future beyond the mountain highlands of Boquete.
Congratulations to all concerned, including Boquete Artworks who have graced the lobby with a lovely exhibit of enduring art works, a fine counterpoint to the ephemeral beauty of live theater productions. Don't miss either.
