[News Boquete] Message for U.S. Citizens: Strong Waves on the Pacific Coast

Due to the presence of strong waves on the Pacific coast this past weekend, SINAPROC (Civil Protection Authority Panama) has set a "Green Alert" warning for all beaches.  Large waves and unsafe swimming conditions are expected to continue until 4:00 p.m. on May 15th.

A "Green Alert" is a warning for individuals to avoid the beach due to unsafe swimming conditions.  In addition, the Panamanian Maritime Authority issued a statement suspending the departure of small vessels from the Panamanian Pacific coast to avoid any emergency situations due to unsafe conditions.

Swell is the movement of the waves (also called swell or wave system) that spreads outside the area where it has generated, and can reach remote places. The swell should not be confused with the tsunami, which are due to earthquakes in the seabed.

SINAPROC has placed a red flag on all beaches to prohibit swimming.  U.S. Embassy Panama advises all individuals to heed this warning and avoid Panamanian beaches on the Pacific coast until the green alert has been raised.

U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Panama are encouraged to enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  By enrolling, you make it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in case of an emergency.
