Dear English speakers in Boquete and beyond,

OSOP, the organization in Volcán that monitors Volcán Barú invites you to a lecture series in six parts presented by one of our visiting scientists.

Dr. Peter Bormann is retired from GFZ, the German equivalent of the USGS. He

has been publishing scholarly works since 1986 and still lectures in

Europe and Asia. He is the editor of the standard manual used by seismic

observatories all over the world.

The lectures will be in very good English with a slight German accent.

The first lecture called "History and future of seismology."

7:00 PM Tuesday January 10th at the Mercado Público, one block from main street towards Cerro Punta, on the right.

We will start on time. No need to RSVP.

The next lecture, on January 26th, will be "Earthquake disasters – scourge of nature or consequence of human ignorance?"

Four other titles in the lecture series will be chosen from the following list.

 1. Contributions of Potsdam to the development of global

    seismological observatory practice

 2. Earthquake disasters – scourge of nature or consequence of human

    ignorance?

 3. Is earthquake prediction possible and feasible?

 4. New approaches to tsunami early warning and often not considered

    problems and chances

 5. Seismic sources and source parameters

 6. Seismic wave propagation and Earth models: Part I

 7. Seismic wave propagation and Earth models: Par II

 8. Data analysis and seismogram interpretation in modern observatory

    practice

 9. Seismic sensors, networks, earthquake detection and location

10. Seismic site selection and network optimization

11. Local events: seismic phases and event location

12. Teleseismic events: seismic phases and event location

13. Earthquake magnitudes: origin, divergency and new measurement standards

14. Mw and Me: origin, similarities, differences and their causes

15. Introduction of the determination of seismic fault parameters

16. Nicaragua and its volcanoes

17. Volcanism in Germany and Bohemia: In older and younger geologic
