[News Boquete] Pilates at the Haven! 6 Ongoing classes weekly- 3 for Beginners and 3 for Intermediates! But Beware- Not for wimps!

Pilates and the Abdominal Scoop

"The Abdominal Scoop can be done anywhere and at anytime, and frankly it should be done as much as possible. "
from Ellie Herman's, Pilates Workbook on the Ball.

"What you are anatomically doing is engaging your deepest abdominal muscles, which function to hold in your viscera and, when contracted, decrease the diameter
of the abdominal wall. The Abdominal Scoop works a lot like a drawstring around a pair of pants when pulled taut. You have four layers of abdominal muscles:
your deepest one is called the transversus abdominis. The second and third layers are called your internal and external obliques. And the most superficial abdominal layer
is called your rectus abdominus. The "rectus" is a workaholic muscle and will do all the work if you let it. The Abdominal Scoop, or "navel to spine" image [as used in Pilates]
is meant to bring in the deeper three layers, which work to compress the abdominal wall and help support the back.
In every exercise you want to be using your Abdominal Scoop to get the most profound results possible.
Optimally for back and postural alignment, you need to be employing the deep abdominal muscles, not only the most external."

Pilates movements emphasize correct alignment of the extremities from an engaged core. Eventually this postural awareness extends into one's life, with whatever one is doing.

If you suffer from pain [or a pooched out belly] because of faulty postural habits- that more than likely, are not within your perceptual range- after a few Pilates sessions,
you will be pleasantly surprised at how a newfound awareness can affect a positive change in your body. However, his change can only happen
when you begin to notice your physical habits and increase the precision of your movements.

Come to Pilates and work on strengthening your core to support your back, align your postural muscles, improve your coordination, enhance your balance
gain flexibility and create long, lean muscles!
Increase your physical awareness & have a great time! But Beware- Change requires discipline and dedication.  Cuz...Everyone knows- Rome wasn't built in a day!
