"Emerging"  •  10" x 10"  •  Encaustic and ribbon on wood panel by Robyn Cole.
Also known as hot wax painting, encaustic painting uses heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. This wax is then applied to a surface, usually wood or hardboard, using a variety of techniques and tools. Heated tools can be used to manipulate the wax after it has cooled. What makes encaustic wax painting so versatile is the many possibilities for adding materials to the wax using encaustic collage techniques, layering, embedding, intaglio and others. It's luminosity and richness make this a most unique medium.

Devil mask made by Jose in Chitre, Panama. These masks were worn by dancers called Diablicos Sucios.
The devil dances have their origin in European masques. Especially after the plague, the macabre and the devil were themes for many celebrations. In the case of the devil dances in Panama, they all serve a religious purpose: the evangelization of the other. So they came to be a vivid image of the battle between good and evil that promoted conversion. Most of the devil dances are usually practiced for the religious feast of  Corpus Christi, that celebrates the presence of Jesus in the host. These practices are colonial, but there are no dates that we can specify as to when or where they started. Most probably very early in the 16th century.

This is a two-panel silk embroidered scene. It was donated by Tom Brymer whose parents purchased it in Korea sometime in the 50's or 60's. It was considered to be antique at that time.
