A reading/study group centered around books that speak to the transformation of our lives from both a Western and Eastern perspective. One such book that is considered by many to be a spiritual classic is The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche Death is not a popular subject, yet it is the ultimate certainty for us all. We who have grown up and lived in a western culture have been given almost no information on the process of our own death. The result is an underlying and pervasive fear of the ending of our lives. As a result, many of us spend life avoiding this great reality, frantically staying busy and trying to apply meaning to what we do. Does it all end, as Shakespeare said, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"? Fortunately, in the last several decades, a different view of death has begun to emerge. The many testimonials to an experience after death (popularly called near death experiences) and a growing realization on the part of science on the ephemeral nature of matter and energy, point to a very different understanding of what it means to inhabit a body and live in a "world". These "new" discoveries have been a part of Eastern spiritual wisdom for millennia and have resulted in cultures who do not treat death and dying as a pariah filled with ignorance and fear. A great contribution to our slowly growing education on the process of dying has come from the spiritual leaders of Tibet. The Tibetan book of the Dead has described the dying process in detail but it is a cumbersome and complicated read. Fortunately, we have been given a beautiful and useful rendition with this gift of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying Through it we are reminded that how we live our lives is intricately intertwined with our death. Day and time will be decided upon when I know what is convenient for most people.
