Computer Classes Offered
Classes in Computer Technology are being offered for the aspiring technician/engineer. These classes will provide a technical foundation for further study in computer-related fields.
Students should be at least twelve (12) years old and competent at grade eight level math.
Both computer hardware and software will be covered.
We'll start by building a virtual computer from scratch. The student will learn the basics of semiconductor and transistor theory and from this, develop logic gates we'll then combine into larger circuits that comprise the core element of a computer. Using basic number theory and boolean algebra—which will be taught—we'll design a simple computer including its machine and assembler languages and the control paths to manipulate data internally.
If there's enough interest and time, we'll build a personal computer from components we'll order.
For the software component of the class, basics of a modern operating system will be taught. The student will learn to program at the operating system level using a 'shell' language.
Classes will meet for 2 hours once a week for 12 weeks at La Jungla in Palmira.
Time & Dates TBA. These will be set as student's availability become known.
Class size limits: 4 - 8 students.
Price $225 for 12 weeks.
Follow-on classes TBA. These would continue to build digital skills and interest. A tentative second set of classes would be one in computer programming. A third, would combine the hardware savvy learned in the first course with the programming learned in the second to complete a student-selected project using a low-cost Arduino or Atmel XPL microcontroller.
