[News Boquete] A Rising Star from Boquete

Boquete received some big news this weekend - Our prodigal son and aspiring actor, Julian Bonfiglio (now Julian Alden), has landed a part in the upcoming series, Better Call Saul, the followup to Breaking Bad, which is shooting in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

And now, as they say, the rest of the story:

In 2010, Jim Hatch was the newly arrived theatrical director in town mounting his first plays, one of which was el Grande de Coca Cola, presented at Tammy's, now Mike's Grill. I went unofficially to see if I could record the event in pictures.

Within minutes of entering the dressing room, it became clear to me that among all the wonderful actors and actresses in the production, Julian was something special.

Playing several parts in the play, his versatility and talent was obvious and delightful. We soon became close friends.

Here he is as a singer in the 2011 BCP Cabaret production

And then in the 2013 Jim Hatch production of Benchwarmers

In between, Julian did a stint in Italy as a fashion model. Through it all, he has enjoyed the support and mentoring of a variety of the good people of Boquete, but two really stand out:

His loving mother Lauretta and his professional mentor, Jim Hatch

As a theatrical director in Boquete and Artistic Director of BCP between 2010 and 2013, Jim elevated theater in Boquete to an extraordinary level. To be sure, Jim was no pussycat - he demanded and got extraordinary efforts from of all who worked with him. He drew talents out of people that we never knew we possessed. Jim recognized the potential in Julian and pushed him to excel.

When Jim left Boquete for his next career in Santa Fe, Julian soon followed. As Jim says, he made sure Julian had minutes in his cell phone, made it to the appointments and didn't freak out the producers or agents.

And now for all of us in Boquete, we have our very own prodigal son who we knew when - We will point to him on TV and the movies and say, "Hey, that's our friend up there!"

Godspeed, Julian Bonfiglio
