Pilates viewed optimal health as the ultimate integration of body, mind and spirit. Photos in his 1945 book, Return to Life Through Contrology, show him at the youthful age of 60, performing the 34 exercises of his original mat series. These exercises are still followed today and provide the foundation of his technique. Since his untimely death in 1987 at the age of 87, due to smoke inhalation- the result of a fire, Pilates instructors and physical therapists the world over, have modified his original mat exercises to accommodate students of all levels of ability toward the creation of an exercise system suitable for "everybody." The addition of multiple size balls, stretchy bands, magic circles and light hand weights, have transformed Pilates' original 34 mat exercises into a diverse, fun, and interesting approach toward the acquisition of a fluidly moving and pain-free body.
However, even as Pilates noted in his original book of 1945, health and well-being require discipline and dedication, and require that the student live in and be responsible for, a balanced body & mind. Pilates knew physical exercise is only a piece of the puzzle, & that good health requires a lifestyle, consciously devoted to one's total well-being.
