[Noticias] Art Show & Film Festival

The arts are flourishing in Boquete!  Artists are moving here, many shops and galleries have opened, and there is a new artists' organization called Boquete Artworks, created to promote visual arts in Boquete.

Boquete Artworks and the BCP Theater & Events Center are teaming up to give the community an Art Show & Film Festival on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, from 12 noon to 6 pm both days.   Many emerging and young artists, as well as familiar, established artists in our region will be on display.  There will be paintings, photography, sculpture, fine woodworking, fabric arts and jewelry.  All work will be for sale.

In addition to the art being offered, six major motion pictures depicting the lives of important artists will be included with the ticket price (see below for details).

The film schedule is:

Friday, May 6 –

·      12:30 pm:  Frida (2002, directed by Julie Taymor of The Lion King fame, conceived by and starring Salma Hayak as famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.   The film includes the story of her relationship with another famed Mexican artist, Diego Rivera played by Alfred Molina.)

·      2:30 pm:  My Left Foot (1989, directed by Jim Sheridan, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in the role of Christy Brown, an Irish painter with cerebral palsy who could control only his left foot.  This film won two Oscars, including Daniel Day-Lewis winning Best Actor for his role.)

·       4:30 pm:  Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003, directed by Peter Webber and starring Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Wilkinson, as well as this year's Academy Award Best Actor, Colin Firth .  The story behind one of the most famous paintings by the Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer, and the model he used for it.)

 Saturday, May 7 –

·      12:30 pm:  Pollock (2000, Directed by and starring Ed Harris, about the acclaimed American abstract impressionist Jackson Pollack, and his turbulent relationship with fellow artist, lover, caretaker and wife Lee Krasner, who gave up her own career in order to support Pollock.  Krasner is played by Marcia Gay Harden, who the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for her work in this film.)

·      2:30 pm:  Lust for Life (1956, Written by Irving Stone and directed by Vincent Minnelli about the bazaar life of tortured artistic genius, impressionist Vincent Van Gogh, played by Kirk Douglas.   Anthony Quinn appears in his Oscar-winning role as Paul Gauguin.  Van Gogh only sold one painting in his entire lifetime, and today his works sell for millions.)

·      4:30 pm:  House of Flying Daggers (2004, directed by Zhang Yimou, the story of the rebellion against the Tang Dynasty in China.   Don't confuse this with Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, or with an ordinary martial arts film…..this movie has it all:  betrayal, friendship, conflict and a poignant love story.  It is our only offering that is not about an artist's life, but rather is a work of art in itself.  The color, movement and characters make this film an amazing visual experience of art in motion.)

Tickets go on sale on April 18 at Mail Boxes Etc. in Boquete and at the Tuesday Market at BCP, as well as at the door on the days of the Art Show & Film Festival.   Admission to the films is included in the ticket price.   There are two types of tickets;   $2 for one-day admission to the Art Show, including any one film of your choice, or $5 for a two-day ticket to both days of the Art Show and ALL 6 films.  The famous BCP Cash Bar will also be open for the duration of the show.
