Volcan Verde Integral Festival Wins Community Support
Volcan, Chiriqui, Panama. The production team of colleagues Lorraine Washington, Patricia Miranda and Leticia Achils launched Volcan Verde Integral, an inaugural festival themed "Celebration of a Healthy Life on a Healthy Planet for Sustainable Living" on 15 April, 2011. The three-day festival, held at the Market (Mercado Horticola y Artesanal de Tierras Altas de Volcan), opened to an appreciative crowd on Friday with the Inauguration Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. officiated by the able María Ofelia Adames (INADEH). The proceedings included a welcome to invited guests: Dr. Joaquin Castillo, Mayor and Bugaba, his wife; Raquel Atencio, Vice President, Chiriqui Chamber of Tourism; Libertad Arosemena, ATP (Panama Tourism Authority) and others; Ribbon Cutting; Cultural Presentation, Fashion show of the Highlands Collection by Celina De Leon and tour of the exhibition.
Over the three days, the festival delivered its vision based on four planks: Wellness and Environment, Sustainable Gastronomy, Fitness and Rural Community Tourism. The premier Holistic Green Festival in the region presented a full slate of topics on Saturday and Sunday for intellectual and gastronomic consumption. Topics ranged from Heliconias y plantas exoticas by Carla Black, Agricultura Organica by Ramon Rivera, and the Verde integral Salad Competition with Seven contestants, officiated by Patricia Miranda. Julieta de Fabrega (Editor of A la Mesa, La Prensa supplement) spoke briefly and provided photojournalistic support. The outcome was deliberated by three judges Elizabeth Worley of Cloud Forest Botanicals, Chef Fulvio Miranda of Mosto Bistro and Shirley Ann Cooks, Pastry Chef. The winner of the competition, Dunia Jimenez – the creator of Salade Espectacular will be published in A la Mesa's upcoming edition of La Prensa Newspaper. Food Safety of the Etnia Ngabe-Bugle presented by Eli Assuncao and Chef Leandro Ávila caught the rapt attention of the audience. The proceedings culminated with a musical showcase including Grupo Folklórico de Tierras Atlas and other entertainers.
The wellness, environment and fitness segments were prominently displayed on Sunday with the launch of the Gran Caminata por la Vida and Walking Club led by Lorraine Washington from Fitcuisine in honor of retired Professor Choly Allen, mother of Patricia Miranda Allen. Forty persons participated in the walk through the town, stopping briefly at sponsor hotel Dos Rios for a water break and returning back to the festival venue. Participating members of the Caminata por la Vida (Walk for Life) Club of the Metropolitan Natural Park in Panama walked at 8:00 a.m. in synchronicity with the Gran Caminata in Volcan in celebration of Earth Day 2011. Yoga facilitated by Nathalie Stewart of Los Quetzales Lodge & Spa, participating sponsor followed the fitness walk; therapeutic massage (Santa Cecilia Gómez); presentations entitled Emotional stress as a factor in vascular disease (Dra. Marianela Tuῆon) followed by The importance of combining food and physical condition to maintain your ideal weight (Lorraine Washington); Foods for digestive health (Dr. Diwamani Kadiroff) and Rural Tourism (Omar Lopez).
Volcan Verde Integral 2011 has created a stir in the community, caught the eye of the Mayor and has become a milestone of achievement and a marker of what can be accomplished in Volcan. Next year's production will take place on the following dates: March 30, 31 to April 1, 2012 and the Festival will focus on three major planks: 1. Wellness 2. Gastronomy and 3. Youth Awareness. The theme will celebrate: Good Food, Recycling, Love and Care for the Planet and Healthy Entertainment for the youth.
